Dean's Story

School I was most inspired in high school by Mr. Lushbough, Ms. Poling, and Ms. Linda Cortes (Hinkley). Having moved from Smalltown, Illinois where I was never challenged to learn more, I found Mr. Lushbough's Chemistry classes full of obstacles to immediate success, something I needed to learn at that time. Ms. Poling (I do hope I am spelling that right) was the first teacher to recognize my skills as a writer AND encourage me to improve, imagine and create. I will ever be grateful to her for that!! Most of all, Ms. Linda Cortes, Hinkley Guidance Counsellor, whose words and actions were always directed toward leading every student possible through the minefield that is high school. Her advice was usually "dead-on target". She had a great deal of love and concern for her students, but she knew when to be tough and honest - and she was brutally so at times, some thought. It must be said for all our teachers and administrators - they did not choose their profession with dreams of wealth or fame. They did not choose it because ...Expand for more
they were either lazy or upwardly mobile. The one hope and dream of every teacher is a rather simple one, but one that often goes unfulfilled. Each of them dreams that some day, years from now, the most academically or behaviorally-challenged child from each and every year they have served will look them up, call them on the telephone, or send them a simple card that says, "Thank you! Because you persisted when others saw no reason to risk the effort, I was able to learn, and now I teach others." While they wait - hoping, but never really knowing for sure if they have improved someone's lot in life through their work - they settle for the small rewards. Like the twinkle in a child's eye that says, "I UNDERSTAND THIS!!", or the apples left on their desks, or a parent expressing appreciation, or a valentine from the class "clown", the "teacher's pet", and the "dunce" sitting side-by-side in their top desk drawer. All those little things that define a successful teacher who is making the grade - the only ones that really counts.
