Dean's Story
Life
Jerry Garcia was right about the trip being long and strange.
I made it through college with good enough grades to get into Law School (and those of you that used to drink with me know what an achievement THAT was).
I fell in love. I chased her 'til she caught me. I went to law school and lost my amateur drinking status and became a professional.
We married. I struggled with my classwork and struggled against the newly-Reaganized thought processes about public education.
They allowed me to graduate to get me out their hair, and I became a Public Defender.
We had a couple of kids and I moved back to Springfield, fought for the innocent accused, tilted at the conservative dragons and still loved being a public defender.
We had a couple more kids and bought the tiny 2 1/2 bedroom house with all the trees and a yard big enou...Expand for more
gh to grow a "Feed the World" garden every year.
They tried to make me a bureaucrat, so I became my own boss. I still am a criminal defense attorney, and I still have a passion for what I do.
But I am getting long in the tooth. I put too many miles on my physical odometer when I was young.
Tilting at windmills (and Republicans) is for younger men, so I think of turning to the classroom to finish out my days. My dear friend Richard Turner has hired me as a part-time English instructor at OTC, so I am at least getting my feet wet.
I still love her, and she still loves me, and our two oldest have left the nest for college. The others are in high school and are showing a closer affinity to their mother's studious nature than to my disruptive one. I wish for all of you that your life has been as full and as rich as mine has been.
