Deana's Story
Life
I was enjoying life in Tennessee, but now I am really loving Florida - I never thought I would move from Georgia, but I did. I have two beautiful daughters, Jordan (15) and Kayce (9). They are a blessing to me each day I live.
It's funny how we change over time. I remember how quiet and shy I used to be. Not any more - I worked as a principal at an alternative school for boys with behavior difficulties. I worked there for almost 13 years. I decided to make a change last year. I left the alternative school and began working at a local elementary school as a Special Education Teacher. I really loved that job but decided to move to Florida. I am now employed in a public school in Florida as a Special Education Teacher - as you can see from my pattern, that is what I love to do.
Life has been very good to me. I'm very thankful for everything I have and the accomplishments that I have made. May God Bless You!
College
I had a difficult time completing school, but some how I managed. I finished my first two years at Clayton State in Morrow, GA. At that time, I was married and had one child. In the middle of it all, I divorced and moved to Tennessee with my family. I began school at Tennessee Tech - the nearest school to my house (one hour away). I spent the next couple of years going to school full time, working full time, and being...Expand for more
a single parent.
Needless to say that when I got ready to graduate and my oldest child began school, I found out that I was expecting another child. I graduated in December of 1996 (Secondary Education/English), and my second daughter was born three weeks later. I took one year off and began working on my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Special Education. I graduated in May of 2000.
Workplace
I was employed with Eckerd Youth Alternatives from 1993 to 2005. Eckerd is an alternative school for male youth between the ages of 10 and 18 who have emotional, behavioral, and educational difficulties. They have been removed from their homes, schools, and communities and placed in our residential facility for treatment.
I began as the Instructional Assistant. I also worked as a Resource Teacher for about two years and the Transitional Classroom Teacher for 4 years. I was employed as the Educational Coordinator (Principal) for approximately 5 years.
My job was very rewarding but very time consuming and emotionally draining. We worked year round - no summers off or state holidays. We had the clients all the time. I enjoyed what I did but needed a change.
I left Eckerd in 2005 and began working for the Cumberland County Board of Education in Crossville, Tennessee. I am now employed as a Special Education Teacher for grades 5-8.
