Deanie's Story

Most of you called me the "poor little rich girl" even though I was far from that. My family is rich in many things- money is not one of them. I'd like to think that many of you remember me as more than just a band/ chorus geek, but that I tried to be a friend when you were in need and a good listener. I think everyone realized I was going to end up a music teacher. It had been my dream since I was 5. I graduated from Meredith College in 1984 and have been teaching every since. I am starting my 25 yr and have spent most of my time with middle school choruses. I know, who in their right mind wants to teach middle school? They are a unique breed, but the satisfaction when it comes together is incredible. For the last 20 years my choruses have been bringing home numerous 1st place trophies and superior ratings. I have also been doing church music pretty much since I was 16. I only lived away from Havelock for a few years. I was in Raleigh for 4 yrs for college, 2 yrs in Rocky Mt. and 2 yrs in MHC. I never wanted to leave the area or my family. I lost my mom in 2004 and life changed from that point on. I was married for a brief time-1989-1997 and have never remarried. I always thought I needed to in order to make my life complete and show I wasn't a failure. I have dated and been engaged several times, but just can't seem to make it down the altar. While I was married, my husband and I were foster parents and took in 2 girls (not related) at ages 5 and almost 7. We ended up adopting the oldest while we were married and I adopted the other days after my divorce. They've been a challenge. The younger one has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She'll be 21 in October. She is smart and beautiful, but lazy and unsure of herself. She has a severe fear of failure (probably got it from me- the "Queen of Low Self-Esteem). The other one started getting into trouble at age 13. Talk about taking your p...Expand for more
rayer life to another level. She is 22 and is about to give birth to my 4TH grandchild. I never dreamed I have 4 children at 46 yrs of age. Jewel is almost 4, Caroline is 2 1/2; Shiloh is almost 11 months and the newest is due anyday now. I have custody of the 2 oldest and we decided last year to move to Concord for many reasons- mainly, our sanity. I really want this 30 reunion to happen and want us to make a pact to get as many people as possible there. There are many from our class that are not on Classmates. We need to make it a mission to find them, contact them, and let them know we want them there. I plan to personally match the yearbook with the classmates list and make it my personal mission to find these people. I was so disappointed at our 10 yr with how many were on the "missing list" and many of them were still in Havelock. When we did the 20, Wendy, Cathy and I worked our tails off to find as many as possible. We narrowed the list down to about 30. I am learning too late in life that we need friends and need to show support to each other in successes and failures, happiness and sorrow; and unfortunately, many of us are starting to see more and more sorrow in our lives. Please plan to be a part of this reunion and let's not just visit for a weekend, let's make these friends a part of our lives for the long haul. I'd like to be able to share so many things with many of you and I know I've written too much tonight, but just know I love and care about ALL of you and I pray that you will make a way to join us in 2010! I always wanted to be a music teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were probably right. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my cell phone, a cold coke, and my lexapro to be able to deal with the day-to-day. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Mike VanZant, because he was so darn funny.
