Deb's Story

After high school I went to UNO for two years then transferred to the University of Iowa. After undergrad school, I moved to Des Moines and went to Drake for my MBA. I always wanted to be a writer, but I thought I needed something - a real job- to fall back on. I took some business classes, liked accounting and went into that. Until that time I was a biology major and with plans of working in health care, but not in patient care. I also took every writing class I could wrote several poems and short stories that were accepted for publication. I found work in Des Moines, during graduate school at Drake where I was obtaining an MBA in accounting. I thought it might be helpful to have a 'real job". first at a medical college, then the Polk County Attorney's Office, then an insurance company. I married my bosses' roommate. My boss was an attorney, as was his roommate, Pat O'Bryan. We had 3 daughters, whom we sometimes refer to as 'the fighting Irish". All are grown lovely ladies now. I am a freelance writer and I have my own company. I write articles for magazines, newspapers and the internet. I also write fiction and screenplays. From 2007 until Sept 2009, the film industry boomed in Iowa. Then the governor here canceled all the film tax credits, so the hollywood companies all left time. But, while it lasted, I worked in ward...Expand for more
robe, as a screenwriter, as a production accountant and as a producer on several different movies. It was hard work, very long days, weekends, a few all nighters - and wonderful. But...now I have much more time to write. I currently live in Omaha and I am single and back in a relationship with my high school sweetheart, Rod Griffith. My oldest daughter, Kelly, went to the University of Northern Iowa for undergrad and grad school in psychology. She is a school psychologist here, is married and she and my son in law, Trevor, gave me my first grand child - a bouncing baby boy born May 6th, 2010. My youngest daughter, Shannan, just graduated from Central College in Pella, IA wih a bachelor's in business administration. . She is a photographer studying business and hopes to have her own photography studio one day. My middle daughter, Karen, attended art school at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and is currently working as a freelance illustrator in Minneapolis. She has illustrated some of my children's books, designed my business cards and done some other work on my projects. So I consider myself very blessed. I had an amazing summer and really enjoyed my 40th high school reunion - the first I've attended. It has been fantastically wonderful getting re-acquainted with the people who meant so much to me all those years ago.
