Debbie's Story

Got married in April of 1984, had a daughter in November of 1985 and a son in 1987. Worked a full time job at the Kansas City Star, using my Fort Osage Vo-Tech training in Graphic Arts. Bought a house in Blue Mills subdivision off 24 Highway and raised our kids. Became a full time MOM. Wasn't working at the time, so became a Girl Scout leader for my daughter and then managed the Fort Osage Girl Scout District for 3 years. My kids went to Blue Hills Elementary School and then Fort Osage High. My daughter graduated exactly 25 years after me. YEAH! My husband died in 1998 - lost everything and moved. Then, I had to get another full time job at the Independence Examiner from 1996-2002. Experienced what it was like to be a full time working mother with a child diagnosed with mental illness - my son. Met a man, quit that job and went to college at Blue River Community College in Independence. Graduated Phi Theta Kappa with an Associates Degree. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I found that I like so many things - Politics, Psychiatry, Education, and Writing. (I piddle with the idea of writing a book.) I now work at a college as an Administrative Assistant. Daughter is going to college at MU in Columbia, Missouri. She is getting a degree in English and minoring in Philosophy. She wants to be either a writer, editor, teacher or something in that line. She met a wonderful boy at Blue River College and he went to MU with her. He is getting a degree in Economics and minoring in Philosophy. He too, would like to teach. They are ridiculously happy and I'm happy for them. I love them both. Now, I am working to find some Assisted-Living arrangements for my son, so that he can be taken care of. I had a heart attack in 2004 and it made me realize that I do not want to worry about what will happen to him when I'm gone. 12-15-08 became unemployed again due to economic hardships in education. So, now I'm back to finish my Business degree at Graceland!
