Debbie's Story
Life
I live in Ottine, still!!!! Can't get me out of Ottine. I have been married to the same wonderful guy (John Everett) for 35 years. We have 3 boys, John Jr. , Christopher & Cory. We have 4 beautiful grandchildren, Victoria who is 14 and Matthew who is almost 10 Victoria and Matthew live in Austin with their mom & dad. Savannah who is 12 and Payton is 28 months old. Savannah & Payton live in New Braunfels with their mom & dad. So all of our grandchildren live close by, which is awesome. I work as a Bookkeeper for Texas Elks Children's Services in Ottine for over 27 years. My husband John works in Austin at the University of Texas as a Chilling Station Supervisor. My husband and I are very involved with the Ottine V.F.D. and other Ottine Community activities. We also love spending time with our kids & grandkids as much as possible. ..My family has been very blessed.......
School
Gloria Maples inspired me to go into the accounting field. Since I really didn't want to go to a 4 year college I went to a 1 year business school in Austin. NOW I wish I had gotten an Accounting Degree to make the big bucks. Back then you couldn't have paid me enough money to go to a 4 year college.
Mr. Karnau was my "FAVORITE" teacher. I thought back then, and still do think he's the greatest. He was always there if we needed help with anything. No matter what.
And, of course, "Band" was my favorite subject. Other than Band and Mrs. Maples Bookkeeping class our senior year, those were my favorite classes. Otherwise I didn't much care for school, thus is why I didn't attend a 4 year college.
All the great Band trips we took, I guess were my greatest memories. We had so much fun on those trips. I remember during our Senior year...Expand for more
I had to attend a military funeral for someone I had never met. I had to play taps at the cemetary in CHEAPSIDE of all places. I didn't want to go by myself, so Dale Klein went with me. I'm sure if the truth were known he only wanted to get out of class. The "Rat"! He was such a good friend. Sometimes I wondered why he put up with some of my crap. I guess that's what friends do.
I told my kids when they were in school to enjoy High School while they could. Those truly were some of the best years of our lives. We just didn't know it at the time. We really did have lots of fun at good old GHS.
College
After graduation I moved to Austin and rented an apartment with classmates, Penny Baker & Dottie Sue Cuvelier. We had lots of fun. Lots of late night partying. Dottie Sue along with other classmates Carlos Molina and Carlyn Mang and I attended Nixon Clay Business College.. I took course studies in Accounting & Management. After completing my year in Austin I moved back to Ottine and went to work. And I'm still in Ottine 40 years later.
Workplace
After attending Business College in Austin I returned home and started working as Bookkeeper for DuBose Insurance Agency, then I went to First National Bank which is now Wells Fargo. After that I married & moved to Waco for one year where I worked as a Bank Teller at Texas National Bank. We hated Waco so we moved back to "Ottine". I then went to work at WalMart in the Cash Office. From there I went to Remschel Brothers Lumber Co. as their Bookkeeper and then in 1987 I started work where I am now at Texas Elks Children's Services as Bookkeeper. That is the extent of my working career. WOOOO! "Big Woop" Impressed????? Not!!!!!!!! Oh well, I'm happy and that's all that matters.
