Debbie's Story
Life
I was Debbie Cross when I graduated from Spring Valley in 1976. I believe I had a lot of friends. We all would like to think we did. I hope most people found me to be kind, friendly and full of life. I think it is important if you are remembered that way. After high school I had one year at a secretarial school but had jobs way above that level. I worked at SLED for five years, an engineering firm as as admin asst to the president, 2 years at a brokerage firm working for their top broker. I was single for many years after my daughter was born in 1988. Her name is Natalie and she is now 16. I made it my priority to be a good mother. When she was two I became self-employed as a transcriber for court reporters so I could work at home and raise my daughter. I did not date for 12 years -- LOL -- yes, hard for ME TO BELIEVE. As life is never what you expect ... just before I turned 40 I told my girlfriend I had done everything on my list, the mental list we all make in our minds about what we want to do in our life. I asked my friend what that means? I mean, I had a wonderful daughter, had great jobs, had some adventures, built a house. I said the only thing I don't have is someone to share my life with. Then I said, but I don't think it's in the cards for everyone and maybe it's not for me. I was always happy with myself and I thought if I ever met someone who made me happier than I was then that would be great. Three months later I found out I had an incurable type o...Expand for more
f lymphoma. I've had radiation twice, chemo, new-age treatments and still I go on, always with a smile. And after going through all of this with the help of two dear friends ... I met someone -- yes, in 2002 on the internet! Peter is retired RAF and worked for the Wales Police Department as an IT trainer. We traveled back and forth to see each other until I moved to Wales in Great Britain in May 2003 and got married on September 23rd at the Conwy Castle. So I did get it all. My husband, Peter, is a wonderful man. He met and married me knowing I was not well. We have traveled to the London, Canary Islands, to the Virgin Islands, to Williamsburg, New York, -- and a few other places in the two years since we've been married. And you can't be a CAROLINA GIRL unless you go to Myrtle Beach. We've been five times !!! We moved back to the states and decided to live in a small town in North Carolina, Wilson. I felt the health care was better in the states, and it's not quite so hot here and it's small town living. I often do think about the friends I left behind ... and hope that those that remember me would have something nice to say. I've always thought it was important. I do not work and my husband is retired. Natalie will start 11th grade in the fall 2005. "Life is like a box of chocolates -- you just never know what you're gonna get." I hope to be here when Natalie graduates, marries, has children. I guess you could say I'm living on the edge now ... but life is good.
