Debbie's Story

When I left high school in 1972, I had hoped to attend college in September, however, I was snatched up almost immediately by an insurance company and I grabbed the job. In the fall of 1973, three of my friends and I decided to see a little bit of the world. We ended up travelling to Spain and Africa for two weeks and had the best time of my life up until that time. Travelling got into my blood and I had decided I would see more of the world as soon as I could. I was at the insurance company for about 2 years when I had a great job thrown into my lap at the City Hall in Kitchener. I first started out in the City Clerk's Dept. and from there progressed to the Legal Dept. I worked my way through the department starting at the bottom and ending up working as the secretary to the City Solictor. I loved my job and was planning on making that my career of choice. However, after my second child, my husband wanted me to stay home with the kids. He had his own business and felt that I would be best suited there. Under a lot of apprehension, I decided that I would stay at home. Many times in hindsight, I wish I had stayed working, but that is the past and I made my decision. We never can predict what the future will unfold. I have not regretted being a stay-at-home mom - I worked part-time working on my husbands books, working at the market a couple times a week, joined a few committees and even became a girl guide leader. I did all those wonderful mom things like assisting in my kids classes, attending school trips, attending their baseball and soccer games, helping with their homework, attending dance classes and assisting with the making of dance costumes and attending Jui Jitsu classes with my son. These are such special memories that I will always hold dear to me. I also attended some part time college classes and proctered at the college. anada and the U.S. since the kids were very young up until my daughter started Grade 9. Then we decided it was more important to keep the kids in school - high school can be stressful, so we sold it. Purchasing that motorhome was the best thing we ever did. The memories they and I have cannot be replaced. We lived in the small town of Heidelberg for over 21 years. That was a highlight in my life - so many good friends and clean, crisp air. In 1997, my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumour and after 5 1/2 months he left this world for a better place. I will never regret being his caregiver for the last 5 1/2 months of his life when we transformed the diningroom into his hospital-at-home room. The kids were 14 and 17 and we went through a lot of emotions and upsets. He passed away in January of 1998. I won't say it was easy to get through those teenage years being the only parent, but somehow we got through it. I honestly wondered if I ever would. I had been working for a plywood company for the past 9 years until just recently when I was laid-off due to a "company restructuring" as they called it, so I am working part-time again at the St. Jacobs Market for the time being while I work at getting myself another job. But I must admit, I enjoy working there since I love to be surrounded by people. I am a very personable lady and tend to make friends easily. I love to make people happy, give of myself and to make use of one of my best assets as I am told -my smile. I have always had and will continue to hold high morals such as honesty, kindness, trustworthiness, caring and giving of myself when someone is in need. I am currently attending a one year college course in business admin. Hoping it works out - it is not that easy going back to school after all these years. I know I have so much more I could share, but that is a small overview of my life thus far. Maybe more to follow at another time. Thanks for listening.
