Debbie's Story
Ken and I have been married since 1970.
We have seven children, from 36 to 24 years - five guys and 2 gals. We've lived in seven states. Indiana , Michigan (4 children born in Berrien County) Tennessee (Nathan was born in Memphis) New York (Daniel hails from Nyack) and Illinois, where Ethan was born.
Right now, one daughter and two sons live in Aiken, but the youngest, Ethan is signing on with the Army. May God Bless and Protect him!
We'll still have Adrian, the oldest son and our granddaughter Haley here in Aiken with Lauren. Daniel and Nathan live in New Yor, support themselves with their music. If you Google "Dan Baer music" or "Nathan Baer bass" their sites are the first in line! I am so proud of them!
Haley is twelve and in the sixth grade. She had a heart transplant at 9, and is in a wheel chair from complications. She has always been at 0% rejection, and is a active normal kid right now - except for the chair and the twice daily anti rejection meds.
The transplant and all the events leading to it was an incredible experience, a tremendous blessing, impossible to relate. We treasure her, and I can not see us moving again.
But ..my favorite location was Lolita Texas, a tiny burg half way between San Antonio and Houston. We were about a quarter mile uphill from the LaVaca River, way out in Matagorda County. The high school had about 300 kids, thats how low the area population was.
I would pass spoonbills in the waters next to the roads as I drove the kids to school, watch the scizzortails on the phone lines and twice I saw bobcats cross the road at night. The bluebonnets would cover our side yard, and lantanna bloomed under the live oaks.Spider lillies covered the swampy areas, and single flowered Cherokee roses were everywhere.
Granted, I could have managed without the huge spiders and fire ants, but, on the whole, it was an incredible place to live.
Our rented house had been built on 11 acres, and the calving pens lined one side of the quarter mile driveway.
The neighboring ranch would bring the longhorns and mixed cattle in on horseback, just like in the movies - hats, boots, ropes and with rifles in saddle holsters.
The mothers were basicly wild, but the calves were so lovely and sweet.

art of the city, not true commercial tracks - they are used mainly for training - but we are surrounded by horses. There are also over 30 polo fields in the county, and the oldest continual use polo field is in Aiken
We were limited in our house choices when we moved here and ended up in a subdivision to get the 5 bedrooms we needed. It is a double lot, with about 3/4 acre fenced in back.
I have 2 sable collies and a red/white siberian mix (might be with Carolina dog).( I work with the Carolina Collie Rescue .)Plus the St Bernard/Husky mix with blue eyes in the photo.
We also have 3 cats; a lady tuxcedo, Mishka; a calico, Princess, and a yellow tabby Ozzie.
I also have a 3 legged box turtle, an indonesian big eyed frog, a red legged frog, 2 fire bellied toads, dwarf and a 35 gal tank.
When we lived in Illinois we had two acres, with 1/4 acre garden and 30 plus fruit trees. We raised chickens and rabbits for sale. That was a very nice life as well, but I sure loved the wildlife in Texas!
Ken works at the Savannah River Site. He was in the Nuclear Navy, and we have always been within 20 miles or so of a nuclear facility or plant.
I didn't work until the kiddo' s were into school, but I've always been actively involved in the pro life movement. In Michigan I was on the state board, and I've always been an officer of the county groups in every state except Texas and New York. (We didn't live there long enough to work around the new baby busy-ness!)
For about 7 years I've sold major appliances at SEARS. I like the job, the people and the pay is decent (really).
We are Catholic, and active at St Mary's in Aiken. I have always been active in the pro life movement. To me it is a matter of social justice. It is discrimination based on age and place of residence!
You can guess we are fairly conservative, tend to vote Republican in National Races.
I do not have a great deal of time to exchange emails, and do not check my logins daily but I'd LOVE to hear from some of my old friends.
Oh, and just a note of reality - there have been other stresses, sorrows and strains in my life.
My Father died from skin cancer, my only brother died from lung cancer and I've not held - even seen- our oldest daughter or her little girl in 5 years.
We live, we learn, we love, we go on - and we must always pray.
Have a Blesed Day!
