Debbie's Story

Life HEY GANG! Has it really been 36 years since graduation? I can still remember the beautiful weather that evening, and the looks of excitement radiating from our faces. We were glowing with pride. We were FINALLY about to set in motion, the plans we had mapped out for our lives. My sincere hope is, that all of you have realized at least some of your goals and dreams that shone so bright that night. So many things have happened to all of us, while traveling our separate roads. Some good, some bad. I pray more good has been been the case for you. My first milestone reached after high school, was completing my studies to become a licensed practical nurse. I still hold a current license. But, on June 29,1974. I achieved my life's greatest accomplishment. I married Timothy R. Smith. Tim is a 1966 graduate of Elyria Catholic High School. Our meager start was above the storefronts on Broadway in Lorain. We purchased our first home in Elyria in August of 1977, and lived there for 18 years. Then, in June of 1995, Tim's job with General Industries in Elyria, moved down south to Searcy, Arkansas. Talk about culture shock! Then, after 7 years, and 35 years with GI, Tim's job was done away with due to down-sizing. We remained in Arkansas for 3 more years. It appeared by that time, our reasons for staying were gone. We took this as a sign from the "Man Upstairs," it was time to return home. And yes, you can come home. We are living proof. I had a job for a short time after moving back, that was directly across the street from the very first house that my parents brought me home to after I was born. And recently, we purchased a home two doors away from where I attended elementary school. Now is "the circle of life" for real, or what? Absolutely none of this was deliberate, it has just worked out that way. These things have really affirmed for me, that I have always been where I was meant to be, when I was meant to be there. They have ...Expand for more
also shown me that I am fulfilling God's purpose for my life. Which has always been, and will continue to be my ultimate goal in life. We've been spending much of our free time with family. We're truly enjoying being able to create memories with them again. We had very little chance to do so during the 10 years we were away. It's also been great reconnecting with friends, some of whom we've been close to for over 30 years. Family and friends are definitely life's greatest gifts. Tim and I have were never blessed with children of our own. But, our brothers and sisters are MORE THAN HAPPY to let us borrow theirs whenever we want. We do have a Chow/Golden Retriever named Rusty. For some odd reason, he's never gotten his mind wrapped around the fact he's not human. We just let him live under his illusion . This makes him very happy as well as VERY spoiled! For the moment, I am a "domestic engineer." In other words,a housewife. I am looking for part time office work. Hopefully in a medical office. But, whatever will be, or not be, I'll accept. Tim is now working for Home Depot as his 2nd career. It has certainly been no picnic reinventing ourselves in our 40s, and still again in our 50s. Has this happened to you ,or happening to you right now? Try to look at it as an adventure, and chance for personal growth. This attitude is all that has helped me keep my sanity! Honest! Fellow members of the Lorain High School graduating class of 1971. I hope your journey in life has been both happy and fulfilling. Maybe we had classes together, or simply passed each other in a stairway on occasion. But, thank you sharing my life, no matter how big or small a part you played. Finally. This is my prayer for each one of you. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May he lift His countenance upon you, and be gracious unto you. May He give you true peace. And, may He always make his face to shine upon you. AMEN Sincerely, Deb (Stephan) Smith
