Debbie's Story

Life After a lifetime in Anaheim and Anaheim Hills, my husband Dana and I packed up our two girls and moved to Colorado and found HOME. A college town with great schools, nice people, sort of like downtown Fullerton with attitude and the arts. I miss the familiarity of being able to close my eyes and mentally drive from Tustin Avenue down Lincoln and all the way to Buena Park and KNOW what is on each side of the road. (I also miss MexiCasa and Jack in the Box tacos.) But life is slower and calmer here and people like to chat and housing is afforadable and we have actual seasons here - I never knew how wonderful SPRING is. Oh and my girls are going to graduate from - are you ready - Rocky Mountain High. Somebody loved John Denver and had a great sense of humor. :) I hope you are well and happy and life is all you thought it would be. I am happily married with young kids - we started late - and am still shocked just how old I am or even more shocked at how old YOU are. :) Be happy and come see us in Colorado! We have a guest suite now. Never thought I would have a house this big. There is life after California and people who are HAPPY that aren't in California.and DON'T WANT to live in California. We live up next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and can see part of the great plains toward the East. Never EVER dreamed I would wind up here but so glad we made the change. God is good. Oh and for those of you that new me from Roaring 20's at EV Free Fullerton - I joined the EV Free here in Fort Collins. After 40 plus years as a Southern Baptist - it was a big step. But I like the people and the ministries and I am the coffee lady on the 4th and 5th Sundays. I make HUGE urns of coffee for the visitation time between services. It allows me to fulfill my fantasies of working at Starbucks and allows me to meet people and with my apron on - I am not so shy. Yes, I am shy even under this insane exterior. And yes, I still know Stormy Knight, Greg Clamp, Steve Wehn, and Veronique Gerard after all these years. And I miss Lester Luzar every day - even 20 plus years after he died. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I think that is a good thing. :) Love you! Deb McCommons Nance - Queen of the Wild Frontier School I am shocked when I read about students killing their classmates. Was I blind in High School? I don't remember people being mean at AHS. I was just a happy theatre freak that hung out with my College Prep friends and theatre friends and we liked everybody. How many of you remember being in the big Musicals? I can remember folks coming out of the woodwork to audition and having a blast - cheerleaders, jocks, artists, MECHA kids, band members - you know what I almost said about band if you were ever in band :) - even some of our druggy friends. It didn't matter as long as you sang loud and could stand on stage. We were all in it together. I think that is one reason why I love watching High School Muscial on Disney so much with my daughters....Expand for more
First it stars Anaheim's own Allyson Reed channeling Mr. Lovegren and even has her own version of his little theatre complete with Settee. Then all the kids coming together to just be themselves. This happy, fun portrayal of High School - IS MY HIGH SCHOOL experience. Well, maybe you need to throw in some broken hearts over crushes and unrequited love, a few bad experiences with Annie Greensprings wine and chatting through Biology - I wish I had actually listened. :) Some of my friends worried about being pregnant or gay or not able to reach their dreams - or their parents' dreams for them - but that would all be the back story. I just don't know how people got so crazy or just plain mean. Oh well - I will stop ranting. No one will read this but me so I am enjoying listening to myself talk. :) College Best part of attending Cal State Fullerton were the friends I made as a New Student Orientation Leader and as a Sigma Kappa. I have done more with the skills I developed as part of the organizations than what I actually studied. Okay - I take that back. I still think about the American Studies classes I had with John Ibson and Fred Lamster. They changed the way I look at American Culture and my life. I really enjoyed my year at California Baptist University. I learned so much from Dr. Marler in my History Classes. I was probably the only commuting student from Orange County and at least a year older than everyone else. I also had to promise not to Social Dance while attending - in the tail of the Disco era no less - but it was worth it. I liked the other students but I can't name one that I kept up with - that is sad to me. I hope to go back to school and get a Masters in Business or American Studies - when my oldest starts college in a few years. I would love to teach at the Community College level and teach practical information that people can use in the real work world. Someday...... Workplace I have worked worked in Sales and Client Services for the last 9 years at AMN Healthcare - they are in San Diego and I telecommute from Fort Collins CO. We place RN's across the United States for 13 weeks or more at a time. I love my co-workers and it is a great company to work for. I think back on the many jobs I have had since college and am amazed at how blessed I have been: Anaheim Chamber of Commerce - Political Affairs Specialist Representative for Assembywoman Doris Allen Corporate Facilitator for Manager Training at Bullock's Dept Stores Human Resources Director at Bullocks Wilshire and FHP Hospital Manager of Training at Focus on the Family Director of Human Resources for Union Rescue Mission in LA And probably my favorite job - Part time while I had little babies Call Center Sales Rep for Budget Rental Cars Don't laugh - it was fun - no stress - good money and great part time hours for a Mom with babies. I loved my co workers and had a blast renting cars to people. I will never be mean to anyone on the phone again - the American Public can be pretty cranky on the phone.
