Debbie's Story
Life
After graduating from High School, I went to Central Missouri State. In 1988 I graduated with an accounting degree. In college, I had met who I thought was the love of my life and we got married a year after college graduation. We moved to Grain Valley and I have lived here ever since. I have 2 children - Sarah born in 1992 and Scott born in 1994. Both are currently in High School. In 2004 I separated from and divorced my husband (cheater). I kept it all (except his clothes, car and golf clubs). He just walked out and into her arms. Now they are married. Boy did I make a bad choice of character. But I'm much happier now!
Job
I work for Bank of America in the Private Weath Management department as a Compliance Manager (a fancy name for an internal auditor). I started with previous banks and have survived many mergers (Boatmen's Bank to NationsBank; then NationsBank to Bank of America; two other mergers into Bank of America )to remain with them. I am coming up on 19 years of service. For the most part, I work from home. Telecommuting is fantastic! Thank goodness for the internet and computers!
Later Life
In June of 2005, my life took a huge turn. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I had surgery to remove the cancerous tissue, did 4 rounds of awful chemotherapy and then 7 weeks of radiation. I lost my hair and was very sick. Follow up scans showed things were fine. A few months later I developed pain in my chest (sternum). I learned the cancer had metatastized and I was now a stage 4 cancer patient with cancer in many bones. I also completed two more rounds of radiation. The cancer has continued to spread throughout my bones and during the entire summer of 2008, I was on a weekly chemotherapy treatment. I have now completed 6 months and will be taking a month off to allow my body to heal. I will go back to weekly treatments in December an...Expand for more
d hope they continue to ward off the cancer. Unfortinately stage 4 cancer cannot be cured, but it can be managed for a very long time. I hope we manage mine for a long time because I want to see my children graduate from high school and college and then move on to grandkids. Unfortunately cancer seems to be the current focus of my life - but I continue to have a life so all is well.
Pets
I own 3 pets. I have a dog, Sophie who is a registered Keeshond. She is very attached to me especially since I work from home. She 'seems' to know when I am not feeling well and tries to cheer me up. I also have 2 cats. Shadow is a solid black shorthair cat that was a stray. Sabrina is a calico longhair cat that we adopted a year ago. Sabrina is definitely my 'baby' and she follows me around the house. There are always hairballs around my house!
Lake Time
I spend a lot of time at Lake of the Ozarks in the summer. My Mom owns a house there and I visit most weekends. During the off season, I do visit the house. It is a place to go and relax. My children have a great time there as well.
Family
My Dad passed away in May 2004 from a massive heart attack. He had heart problems all of his life, but this was the one they could not bring him back from. I was out of town (in California) on business when he died so it was very hard on me. This has brought my mother and I closer together. Then with my cancer diagnosis, she and I have become even closer. My brother Mark - graduated from Raytown in 1986 - is now married and lives on Olathe. He has a step-daughter and a son. My nephew is awesome. He loves his Aunt Debbie and I love him right back. He loves coming to my house to spend the night. He just entered kindergarten and he is a very smart young man - and cute too!
That just about sums up my current situation in life. I would love to heare from other classmates.
