Deb's Story

2023 update of life as I live it. Look for me on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram (DuckieDeb) and Twitter (DuckieDeb). MARRIAGE & FAMILY Despite the unlikelihood of our teenage marriage surviving, ours is still going strong. Chuck (La Sierra '71, Oregon '77) and I will celebrate our 50th anniversary on May 26, 2023. Our son Alex and daughter Erin are both married with families of their own. They have brought us much joy and we are very proud of them for being wonderful parents and having successful careers. We love being Noni & Pops to Alex’s twins Wylie & Winter who live in Los Angeles CA, and Erin’s children, Everett, Adelaide, and Arthur, who live in Tacoma WA. HOME We have called many places "home" as college, the military and our careers resulted in many, many moves! Now that we are nomads, home is wherever we decide to park “Sweet Pea” - the 33’ RV we have been living and traveling in since we retired in 2017. Our summer home base is in Olympia WA where we own property and park Sweet Pea. We will eventually build a cabin when we decide to settle down. WORK After a 40 year career in the Air Force and aerospace industry (me) in education (Chuck), we have no regrets about retiring in 2017. Funny thing though - in fall of 2022 we paused retirement for about 6 months. Chuck substitute teaches in Olympia, and I’ work remotely as a Contract Specialist for Premera Blue Cross in Seattle. We are coming up on our 7th nomadaversary on Jul 1st. We spend summer & fall in the Pacific Northwest and then hit the road, We love being snowbirds, traveling to wherever the sun is shining. We have visited 16 states and two stares in Mexico. We especially love going to Southern California, the Southwest and Mexico. In fall of 2023 we will embark on a 6 month trip that will include the remaining 32 states of the lower 48. FUN STUFF We have a rescue cat named Stormy and a rescue dog named Chico who we adopted in Puerto Penasco Mexico. They are the best travel companions. When the sun is shining we are out...Expand for more
side. We love the beach, hiking, canoeing, biking, exploring and roasting marshmallows. We love discovering all the beauty nature has to offer here in the Pacific Northwest. Mostly, we love play dates with our grandchildren, the three youngest in WA and the twins in Los Angeles. Over the years we’ve have had the opportunity to travel abroad, venturing to Mexico, Canada, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Caribbean and the Republic of Korea - our favorite foreign travel destinations are Italy & Ireland! This May we will celebrate our 50th anniversary with a trip to Europe, where we will visit friends in Germany and then head to Amsterdam where we’ll take a 12-day cruise in the British Isles - adding the Scotland, Wales & England to our list of countries visited. VALUES Spiritual - We have been Jesus-followers since high school and Young Life. We have forsaken the traditional church and now live by the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:35-40. He has sustained us through life's struggles and we are grateful that he has blessed us with a loving family, good health, wonderful friends and a peace that surpasses all understanding. Political - having both served in the military, we hold the highest respect and value for our Constitution & democratic republic. We are also fervent progressive Democrats who hope to see our country become more compassionate and caring for the unhoused & refugees. We are advocates for police reform & common sense gun laws. We also believe in taxing the wealthy 1%ers & corporations in order to provide all Americans universal health care and free public education from preschool through two years of college or trade school. Health - we believe in science and the threat that climate change poses to our planet. Having lived through the pandemic, we value trusted scientists and medical professionals more than ever. We believe personal responsibility to others outweighs individual freedoms when in the midst of climate change and a global health crisis.
