Debby's Story

Workplace Since High Scool, I worked 15 years as a Medical Laboratory Technologist RT in Blood Bank at Oshawa General Hospital. I did my thesis for my ART in Immunohaematology. In 1989 I "retired" early for 4 years of stay-at-home-Mom with Kelly and Jamie. These years were full of volunteering 5 days a week in the computer lab at the school. I then began working in a computer store for 1.5 years where I taught children how to use computers with educational software. At this time I designed computer camp programs for kids during the day in summer and weekly during the winter. When the owner closed the computer lab at the store, I bought the computer camp equipment and programs and brought 3 work stations home to have my own home-based business. That lasted for 1.5 years until a major CAW strike rearranged the Durham region. For a more drastic career change I worked in an English pub/scotch bar behind the bar and ran the fine dining room for 3.5 years. During my bar employment I set up a business profolio for the bar and designed/ computerized all the departments. (The owners were friends). I fell at work and had knee surgery with rehab and retraining for the following 1.5 years. My next career move was to Lakeridge Ski Resort as Administrative Assistant to the owner and two Directors. I have been there for 7 seasons until 2008. Oops midlife change of careers...I always thought I would be in Blood Bank forever!! I took my medical Background and business admin experience and landed a job at Port Perry Imaging. I worked with the Ontario Breast Screening Program doing data entry for the government. This lasted from 2008-2016 when the Doctor sold the clinic....downsized. Next I w...Expand for more
as hired with DTM Consulting Services where I worked with the sales/ business development manager. That was for one year and job eliminated again. Currently during Covid I am back at college taking my Certificate for Volunteer Management. After all those years in Guiding and Scouting management positions I might as well try to get employment for my experience. Wil and I have been married 44 years. Wil was with GM for 41 years and retired as a General Supervisors's job 2014. We met through Scouting and Guiding and we are both still actively involved. Our daughter Kelly graduated UWO in music and the Fanshawe in Emergency telecommunications and is a Communications Officer for Kitchener for 16 years now. She is still a ski and snowboard instructor, downhill racing coach, ski patroller, Before KFD she was a High Ropes Program manager, and earned her Black Belt in karate. Our son Jamie graduated from The Toronto Film School in videography. He owns his own business ByPass Productions. He was involved in the production and featured riding with a snowboard movie 'Paint the Town Red' and 'Six Months to Live'. Jamie was a snow board instructor, free style coach and a competative snowboarder and ranked as a top railer in Ontario and on the Atomic team. During the summer months Jamie was a competative show lumberjack with the Westcoast Lumberjack Show and is still called on if they are short handed. Jamie moved to Fort McMurray in 2011 and started driving the world's largest trucks in the oil sands. Jamie promised he would make me a Grandmother and he did. In 2019 Carter joined the family. As you can see I have no time to be bored with my kids and life... just happy with my family and friends!
