Deborah's Story
Life
I'm married to a Greek, Nikos, and relocated to Greece in June 2003. We've been married since 1992 and we have two sons, Jason (2000) and Kimon (2004). Currently busy taking care of my boys and learning Greek. Well, that's the short version. Would love to hear from folks.
Thought I would try to expand on the above. As you might guess, I keep busy with trying to learn Greek and raising my two guys.
Jason has been identified as "twice exceptional" which means that he is "gifted" but has a bucketload of learning disabilities that we are still trying to figure out. He is extremely creative with an amazing imagination. He particularly seems to be gifted in the arts. It has been tricky trying to get his educational needs met since the education system in Greece is really bad and they don't recognize "giftedness" at all.
My other little guy, Kimon, has been identified as having PDD-NOS which puts him on the autism spectrum. A bright, friendly guy...his biggest issue has been communication...he didn't start to understand what we were saying or to talk until he was almost 3. But now he is tryi...Expand for more
ng to make up for lost time. He still has a lot of difficulties with speech but he is doing much better and has already started to read (in English). He has been attending a special school where he can also get speech and occupational therapy.
So, it has been an interesting 5 years since we arrived in Greece. I've had to acquire a lot of new information which isn't easy with my old brain. And I've discovered, much to my shock, that I have some learning disabilities of my own. (Dyslexia does run in my family.) This has impacted me most in trying to learn Greek. I have a type of dyslexia that affects the ability to learn and to speak foreign languages. Not good when you are living in another country. But I am learning, just not as fast as everyone around me wants me to learn.
For "me time" I go to Bookcrossing meet-ups at our Starbucks (yes, we have one here) and get together with friends from the local foreign women's group. There are some Americans here, including someone from the Philly area who is the same age as me. They are a great group and have helped to make the transistion a bit easier.
