Born in 1954, Deborah Goldhaft is part of the famed "Baby Boom" post WWII generation of Americans. Deborah was raised in Southern New Jersey, which was a mostly rural area during her childhood. She spent her youth roaming her father's laboratories, climbing and dreaming in trees, riding bikes without using the handlebars, and reading copious amounts of Science Fiction after her mother threw out her comic book collection. College led her to study Anthropology as a generalist, and afterwards her interest in people and lifestyles led her to live, travel, and explore, overseas for several years. dying and working production glass with the Seattle glass community and produced, with help, a fine son to raise. Together they moved to Vashon Island, WA in 1988. On Vashon, due to the intermittent loss of power, she set up a sandblasting studio. It was safer with a young child around than having furnaces loose power. It turned out to be a great idea, as she found the sandblast and glass medium more suitable for her artistic expression. Deborah founded Fire & Ice Glass Studio on Vashon Island, Washington, in 1991, ten years after she first became interested in becoming a glass artist. After moving to the Providence, Rhode Island area in 2004, this studio is now transforming into Fire & Ice Studio, where etched and carved glass, printwork, and in the future, textile design, will take place. Besides glass, her favorite pastimes are reading and lively conversations about the state of the universe.
