Deborah's Story
After graduating from Lawrence North, I studied Spanish Secondary Education at Indiana University where I met my husband through Campus Crusade for Christ. For my husband’s masters, he went to Wheaton College while I worked as the Library Director’s assistant. I taught Spanish and English in California while my husband, Scott White, got his PhD in psychology. We had our first child, Kristi, there in ‘87., then moved to South Carolina for his internship. We settled there for 12 years where my husband built a private practice, Columbia Counseling Center. I was busy raising and homeschooling our daughter and two sons, Taylor and Justin, tutoring Geometry on the side and mentoring young women.
In 2000, my husband took a position as a professor of psychology at Belhaven University in Jackson, MS where we currently live. We raised our children and I took a position of teaching Latin and Spanish in a small private classical school. Theee years later my life drastically changed when I had a head injury.
Five years later I started working part-time, tutoring students and substitute teaching. I also started volunteering as an En...Expand for more
glish Teacher to Internationals. Eventually I got a contract teaching English to international Nissan employees and their family members while I continued volunteer teaching.
In 2010 our daughter,Kristi, graduated with an engineering degree from LeTourneau University and married the day after graduation an engineer she had met in Ethiopia on a mission trip.
In 2012 our first son graduated with a political science degree from Sanford University.. Our youngest son, Justin married his high school sweetheart, Meredith, in 2014 before they both graduated from Belhaven University.
My husband and I had an opportunity in 2013 to serve in Cambodia, training staff in ESL and Counseling at an anti-child-Sex-trafficking NGO. We have returned for 2 months every summer since then and have expanded our volunteer staff training to 8 organizations and one large evangelical church and school based in the capital city of Phnom Penh.
In 2016 we welcomed our first grandchild, Rose, the daughter of Kristi and Tim who live in Houston.
We have had many difficult life challenges, but we have found our peace, hope and joy in following Jesus Christ.
