Deborah's Story

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, BA 1976; University of Oregon, School of Law, JD 1986; Member of California and Nevada Bars, 1987; Married; One Daughter, who graduated UCLA Law, 2011. Live in Lake Tahoe, from 1987 to present. I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I write constantly, but mainly legal briefs! I always liked to read and it revealed the world to me. I did not know that reading would lead to a legal career. It is hard work, but 'work hard, play hard' is my motto. I am friends with many of my San Pedro classmates. Amazing how an LA City School turned out so many amazing people. I am proud of them: Irene Franco (Towers), Sandy Vega (Garcia), Kathy Dominguez (Kosky), Sally Smeltzly, Marsha Miller, .... I learned so many things from my San Pedro HS teachers. My Home Economics teacher, Mrs. Joyce, taught me self-esteem (giving me a trophy for my burnt upside down cake), my English teacher, taught me courage (having a music talent show and let me play oatmeal boxes), Mrs. Erhke taught me to hold my head up high (and posture). My cheerleading days...Expand for more
taught me confidence (I cannot believe I was a cheerleader). My mathematics teacher first introduced me to sexism (telling me a pretty girl did not need to learn math) and I knew it was wrong. My classmates taught me about racism (I did not understand what was racist behavior, but I learned!) and why it was wrong. Both racism and sexism helped lead me into a legal career to right civil wrongs. I am a civil lawyer who is known for cutting government red tape, helping people with various civil issues: business, land use planning, construction issues, etc. I married my high school sweetheart too young, then divorced. I am now married to a businessman and we are very happy. I moved to Lake Tahoe over 24 years ago and stayed. We love the beauty of it: the lake, the changing of the seasons, the wildlife, the bears, the coyotes, the bald eagles. I still see some of my high school friends and we keep in close touch. We all 'made good' and our kids are doing well, too. I do not get to Pedro as much since my Mom died, but do stop by occasionally. I wish all the current students great success in life. You can get a good education there.
