Deborah's Story
Life
My philosophy is that the day you stop growing is the day you start dying. My life has been a continual cycle of growth and discovery.
As a single mother with 3 small kids, I went back to school. I got my Engineering degree at 38. A couple of years ago I got my MBA. It's been a great experience challenging myself to continue my education. I have no plans to get a PhD, but I will never stop taking courses of one type or another.
I recently got certified as a CERT team member. CERT is Community Emergency Response Team and it's a program that's sponsored by FEMA and local Fire Departments to teach community members to respond in case of a disaster that has emergency responders overloaded.
In the summer of 2006 I went with my 17 year old to Bay St. Louis (ground zero) MS to help Habitat for Humanity build homes for Katrina victims. der myself very fortunate to be able to participate and give what I can to this rebuilding effort.
Last summer, following the death of my aunt from breast cancer, I signed up to walk in the Seattle 3-day in her honor. I hurt my knee and was disappointed not to be able to walk the whole 60 miles. I managed 52 miles in the 3 days of the walk and raised a couple thousand dollars for the cause.
I can honestly say I like myself infinitely more and am happier with my life now than I was in High School. If I'd only known then what I know now. If only there was a way to pass that knowlege on to kids when they're young enough to avoid our mistakes. The good news is that they do listen, even when you think they're not. They go through phases where it seems like they're not, but they do come back around. My kids are wonderful and they make me proud every day. Last year for Christmas they gave me the best gift ever: they told me they appreciated all the effort I'd put into raising them.
