Deborah's Story
Update 1/15/09
After much soul searching, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher, despite the low pay and lifestyle changes/sacrifices which I've had to make. I received my elementary teaching credential in the summer, but did not find a job in August due to the State of California's budget problems. School districts started the year with substitute teachers which they later hired. In my overconfidence that I would find a job, I went gallivanting around Santa Monica with several family members instead of attending the summer sub orientation (bad decision)!
Currently, I spend most of my time subbing part-time, volunteering, and working diligently on losing the weight I gained during my schooling. I have three more classes to finish my master's degree, but I'm waiting until I find a job because it could hurt my chances of getting a job. They have to pay you more! In addition to volunteering at my daughter's (Nicole, 12) school, I'm very committed to the organization, Wonder Inc., where I've volunteered for the last three years as a mentor for chi...Expand for more
ldren in foster care. I also spend a lot of time at the gym doing cardio work (swimming, treadmill, elliptical trainer) and weight training. I just signed up for the October session of the grueling Camp Pendleton Mud Run, so I have to get in tip-top shape!
Although I miss St. Louis and would like to return home, I have become quite a Californian in many ways. I love the mild weather, outdoor activities, proximity to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, and the relaxed Northern California ways. I grow many of my own vegetables, walk to the local farmer's market each Saturday, and recycle religiously. Everybody says that I took very quickly to the aggressive driving here. I've scared every single person who has visited me from St. Louis with my driving! To ease my home sickness, I return to St. Louis twice a year--the week of Christmas and for one month every summer when my daughter gets out of school.
I know this is way too long, but I blame it on years of having to write essays!
I keep in touch with many family members and friends through my facebook account.
