Deborah's Story

My how thing can change -- I'm going back to school. Since it has been 42 years since I last set foot in a classroom this could prove to be verrrrrrrrrry interesting. I will start at John A. Logan in January and am taking some courses that will remind me of what I have forgotten and to learn something new. Now seemed like the time to do it if I was going to. Outside of being a little nervous, I am looking forward to it. Life I am now living in Southern Illinois. I'm single and no children. I somehow ended up working as a legal secretary and found out that I have a knack for it and am pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. I lived in Prescott for about 5-7 years and during that time I decided that I had had it with the legal field and was never, ever going to work in a law office again -- didn't know what I was going to do but anything would be better. I ended up working as a bartender in Prescott for about 2-3 years and surprisingly enough didn't do a bad job -- 'course I have to admit that during my 30's Then I moved to Texas after my mom did which basically turned out to be the biggest mistake I could have ever made. I also made the grandious mistake of getting married for the first time at 45. I found out that even older people can be incredibly stupid when it comes to...Expand for more
marriage sometimes. For those of you who remember how much I used to brag about being from Texas (if any do) I found out something. I still love the fact that I was born in Texas and consider myself a Southener but I have also found out that the best part is "being FROM Texas". But I can brag about the fact that I voted 4 times AGAINST Bush. I finally got smart and unlazy after living in Texas for 12 years and moved to Southern Illinois. Mary Rollason Periman is also here in Southern Illinois. One of the many perks of moving to Southern Illinois has been the diversity of people I have had the pleasure of meeting, getting to know their stories and learning about their cultures, and gaining new friends -- I have met people from Cuba, Libya, South Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand just to name a few. The young lady in the photos with me is YouJin and when I first met her she was working towards her Masters and now has her PhD. She is teaching English as a second language in Atlanta, Georgia, and I couldn't be more proud of her if she was my daughter. Mary went back to Arizona in September and shared her pictures with me and I have to admit I felt homesick for Arizona. Those pictures really made me want to go home. I still think that the best music ever is OUR music.
