Dee Dee's Story
Life
As planned, I attended BYU-HI where I met my 1st husband in a SCUBA class. He was a hemophiliac & I understood his life would not reach much past 50s. Undaunted, I married him, loving him for his zeal for adventure & zest for life. We moved to San Fran where I worked w/dolphins and toyed w/acting. I was in the "Executioner's Song" w/Tommy Lee Jones, doubling for Rosanna Arquette. When I got pregnant w/our 1st child, we bought a home in Puyallup. Our son, Jonathan was born in '84. Shortly thereafter, John (husband) was diagnosed HIV+ from all the blood transfusions he relied upon for life. Back then the docs actually told us to go ahead & have more kids. Our daughter, Julianna was born in '88. Neither of us had HIV. Which I must tell you is no less of a miracle to me then the parting of the Red Sea. In '89 John became sicker and went into active AIDS. 3 yrs of Hell, straight out of Dante', ensued. He and his brother (also born a hemophiliac) died in '92, a few months apart. I was with them both at their passing. This was a dreadful time for me as I was worn out and grieving and my children were suffering. I put them in counseling & kept their lives as stable as possible for a year. Then I sold everything & moved to England. I was determined to have a complete change of scenery & an adventure...something to take myself away. We traveled all thru England & Scotland & Wales staying in youth hostels. I can still see my little ones trudging along with their backpacks down many a road. I fell in-love with Scotland, but settled in Shrewsbury on the Welsh border. We had a marvellous year filled with travel, education, & life-long friends that took us under their wings. Unbeknownst to me @ this time, Corbin Volluz ('78) heard about me thru a mutual friend. Since he was divorced, he hired a P.I. to try & find me. Corbin was told I had JUST moved to England for a year. Long story short: we eventually re-connected by letters. Also I wanted to stay longer in the UK & had been offered a job in a hospital to set up and oversee the childbirth Ed program & be an attendant mid-wife, since that had been my background. This was my ticket to stay. But Corbin was a persitent bugger & letters gave way to phone calls, to him visiting our cottage in Shrewsbury. Eventually we married (in England.) Later I flew home & moved up to Mt. Vernon where he was the SR deputy prosecuting atty. He brought a son & daughter into the mix w/my 2 children. I was busy blending a family & making a go at a new life. Blending a family and concentrating on a new marraige about killed me, but by then I was made of tough stuff! In '96 we welcomed a baby, Celcionna. She takes great pleasure in being the adored baby sister. As my step-daughter Sylvia explains, "She is the glue that seals us all together." Corbin is now in private practice=criminal defense. He also writes scholarly papers on ancient religious reseach & has been published in various journals. He even gets on radio & in newpapers often! He has been good to me; warm & generous & fun. What a personality! I laugh everyday! The man worships the ground I walk on; & after 13 yrs of marraige, baby, that's an accomplishment! My children call him "dad." An honor he has earned. My son, Jonathan, 23, is returning to the USAF Academy in July where he will finish his last 2 yrs: majoring in Chinese and Poly Sci. He has been a pilot since the age of 15. He is a leader of extraordinary strength & talent; a light in many lives. Julianna,19, is @ WSU studying criminal psych and working hard at crew (rowing team) wherein she earned a partial scholarship. She hopes to work for law enforcement/maybe FBI. She is a gem. A darling young woman who is sweet & giving & loving...& petite & blond...& a black belt in karate! Celcionna is 10 & well on her way to blk belt too. She swims with me for HOURS in the ocean, every year, when we return to Hawaii. She is fearless & joyous; a real hoot!!
