Deborah's Story
Life
After never planning to return to Essex County, or New Jersey I moved to West Orange in 1994 and have remained. I live with my son, my husband, sometimes my stepdaughter, our dog - Avril (a Petit Bassett Griffon Vendeen, otherwise known as a PBGV) and my son's pet rabbit "Hoppy". For three years I served as a Deputy Attorney General in the Office of Bias Crimes and Community Relations, prosecuting hate crimes throughout New Jersey. Recently, I was transferred to the Medicaid Fraud Section. I am also an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School, my almamater, where I teach Trial Advocacy. I am currently writing a book on New Jersey Domestic Violence Law which should be published in 2006.
Workplace
After I graduated Brandeis University in 1980 I planned on an extensive career in the broadcasting industry. I worked as a radio reporter, and for Associated Press, ABC (on the 1984 Olympics in ra...Expand for more
dio affiliate relations), and for CBS Television Networks in affiliate relations. After seven years I saw the industry undergoing dramatic changes and realized the future I expected was not there. I began a masters degree at NYU in Liberal Studies and Interdisciplinary Thought with the intention of getting a PhD in politics and engaging in media consulting for politicians. Although I completed the degree, as I began the process of applying to graduate programs, I realized that my fascination with law and government was the direction I should take and decided to attend law school with the intention of returning to the media industry, just differently. While in law school participated in a legal services clinic where I had the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of licensed attorneys. I instantly hooked on the challenge, excitement and drama of the courtroom and have been there ever since.
