Deborah's Story

Thought I had a history in here already. I guess it was the lonngggg Q and A I did. Here goes: I graduated Hart in 69, did the first 3 years out at COC (piddled a year there) meeting the inspirational James Decatur Boykin, bio teacher, who shoved me out of the nest and on to Cal State Bakersfield where I graduated in 75 with a degree in nursing. I practiced for roughly 23 years before entering teaching. I now teach 3rd grade and spec ed. We do a model that allows the kids to be in one classroom so they don't get splintered teaching and socializing. It works. I love what I do for a living (loved nursing, too and keep the license active), but it doesn't define who I am. Divorced in the last two years, was married over 30 years, have two grown children (both college educated), have volunteered in a variety of endeavors inlcuding making costumes for our Civic Dance Theater's Nutcracker done each year, acting as RN at various ultra events when I cannot run myself or am giving back to the ultra community, to working with the County Medical REserve Corp. My main love, though, is endurance running (also called ultras). I didn't begin to put one foot in front of the other in anything but a walk until I hit 49. I experienced two really great years of running all sorts of events from small 5 and 10 Ks to half marathons, and straight into 50Ks and 50 milers. I did do a couple of full marathons (Nope. Not a "sub 4hr person. 4.5 is just fine with me), but really hate pavement running. At the end of those two years, I got sick, and had to rebuild. As of June 7, 08, I found that I am dealing with Valley Fever or coccidiomycosis, a nasty fungal pnuemonia that can be rough to treat. So far, so good. We manage the hand we are delt, so it is rebuild again. Happens. I love these people in my sport. Very open, accepting, kind, will go a mile for you even when you haven't asked, they pay that kind of attention to the concerns of others. A very spiritual set of circumstances there. It can't be anything other than that simply because of the hardhsips you encounter on these things, the stuff you share with your companions, the things you learn about yourself. it has been life changing for me - wonderfully so. I also, though nowhere near as adept at it, love to ride horses, fishing, and am training to do some serious backpacking soon. On the indoor side of life, I love to be an audience at any music happenings I can attend. Am new to pure form yoga (some gyms offer a "canned version" mixed with other disciplines, which is ok to get going, but ...), it is intense, tough, and am loving it. ialist, Mild/Moderate with a masters. Very excited to be going back to school after a 10 year break and, no, I'm not crazy :) Anyhow, no complaints. I love the Hicks books on The Law of Attraction, Ask and It Is Given, The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent, etc. Along with some really wonderful friends in all areas of my life, the reading, experiences, and my son's influence, I have it made. Just finished James Donovan's Terrible Glory, about Custer's Little Bighorn massacre. Finished The Septembers of Shiraz by Sofer and have begun Stalking Irish Madness by Patrick Treacy ... his search to understand the heartbreaking history of schizophrenia in his family. Interesting. He's also very funny. My current favorite read, however, was three Cups of Tea. Started it last summer and put it down when the school year got started (athletics trumps reading), but just finished. I admire Greg Mortenson so very much. He is an RN who was raised in Tanzania, now lives in Boseman, Montana, in a missionary family who was most focused on helping indigenous people rise above their poverty through education. Greg was a mountaineer who "failed" K2 in Pakistan nearly 20 years ago (good thing, IMO, considering the true fail rate of those who lose their lives in the place), got lost on the descent, was helped by the poor people of Korphe, and the rest of his life has been spent building schools for these people of Pakistan and, more recently, Afganistan. Mortenson is an example of a true American who serves (did his time in the military gladly) not only his country, but his fellow man, overcoming tremdous odds and working intelligently with people of other cultures, coming to understand those cultures, and KNOWING the absolute value of education in combating not only poverty, but increasing the chances of peace around the world and ... the raising of girls and women in countries where women are suppressed in so many ways. He, along with Ayan Hirsi Ali, are my heros. So was Jim Boykin. They are all so very alike in their concern and caring. While I am on it I should acknowledge Mrs. Bodine who was our leader when I was a candystriper at Hillside Community Hospital while we were in high school. She gave of her time, too, so that girls who had less means than some, in what was out more isolated community, could be exposed to community service and the possiblity to entering the healthcare profession in one form or another. She, too, was another influence, along with Mr. Adelini, in making sure I got to Cal State up here. I will never be able to thank them, or my parents, enough for helping me get where I am. Thank you. Wishing you all the best. Write to me if you care to. I don't bite. :) Debi
