Deborah Brown:
CLASS OF 1973

Deborah's Story
After graduation, my family moved to San Diego, where I soon obtained my beautician's license, but after working in salons for 7 years, my skin on my hands & arms became so allergic to all of the chemicals, that I had to find other work. So, I got a job with a building materials supplier, then a lumber yard, & finally a window manufacturer. I worked in estimating, contractor sales, & accounting. The building slump in 1990 forced the window co. to close their office in San Diego, so I was laid-off. I then decided that I needed to move elsewhere in order to pursue the "American Dream" of home-ownership. I moved to Oregon, where I still live on my 2+ acres, with my Great Danes & my "significant other", Jack. I started doing caregiving for the disabled & seniors, & I got my Oregon beautician's license, & I also offer "Mobile" hair & nail care to the same people I work for, as well as those in care homes. I am also a "Mobile" Notary Public.
I was an active member & elected leader of the public employees' union for 10 years, since some of my clients were under the Medicaid program, meaning the State paid me to care for them. I was elected to represent my County on the state-wide Board of Directors for the Homecare workers. In 2010, the local State office decided to terminate me (I believe it was because of my union activism), so now I only work for ...Expand for more
"private-pay" seniors, & am a member of the Retirees' local.
In October of 1998, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, & chose to have my left breast removed. My lymphs were all clear, so we got it all with the surgery. I DID have chemo, but it was very low-dose (I never got deathly ill, & I didn't lose my hair). I still have my long straight hair, which I always wear up. I am a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, visiting newly-diagnosed patients in the hospital, to answer their questions, & to let them see that it is survivable. I also offer classes for survivors where I show them how to do skin & hair care, makeup, & wig-care. I have become a big vocal advocate for early detection, because a mammogram saved my life. I also served on the Board of Directors for our local Cancer Services office for several years. I now also volunteer for the Susan G Komen foundation, doing educational outreach to let uninsured women know that free cancer screening is available in our area, since I am living proof that the program saves lives. I will celebrate 15 years as a cancer survivor on 10/29. What do I do in my spare time?? I SLEEP, of course. I would love to hear from any of my classmates out there, but please understand that I am "Technologically-challenged", so I probably won't be posting any pictures, but I will gladly respond to E-mail messages.
