Deborah's Story
Life
Well, I moved from El Paso to Los Angeles in September of 1983 and have lived in L.A. ever since. I don't have kids and, in fact, was steadfastly single until the age of 40. Then on July 9, 2002, I finally married an attorney whom I had met through an internet dating service three years earlier.
I'm spoiled right now because I don't have to work and am able to go to school full-time to finally earn my bachelor's degree. However, I do want to get back to work as soon as possible -- hopefully as a practicing psychologist.
Let's see, I live in a three-bedroom house in a lovely, secluded neighborhood on a hill in the South Bay area of L.A. (kind of a suburb). I have one cat and one german shepherd and I spend my days either in class or studying or running errands. For fun, my husband and I often go to the Palm Springs area for the weekend, or up north to Santa Barbara and the wine country. We've been to Hawaii several times and, in fact, we got married in Mauai. I haven't been to Europe yet but we plan to go in the next couple of years. ...Expand for more
Those are the highlights, I guess. It hasn't always been easy living in a big city like L.A., with the high cost of living and long commutes to work, but it's pretty much always been interesting.
Workplace
After junior college in El Paso, I moved with my older sister to Los Angeles in 1983 and began working as a secretary. I moved around to different secretarial positions quite a bit, staying no longer than 3 years at any one place (I got bored easily). The 3-year stay, by the way, was with Paramount Pictures studios in Hollywood. That was fun because I got to see TV celebrities on the lot like Ted Danson and Danny Devito. Then in 1995 I took a job as administrative assistant with a company in the South Bay area of L.A. called Computer Sciences Corporation. I stayed there for seven years. When I left CSC, I stopped working and temporarily retired in order to go back to school and earn my bachelor's degree in psychology. I've got a couple more years of school to go and will hopefully be able to start a new career in my new chosen field.
