Deborah's Story

Life I have been divorced since 2003 and live in Canton with three of my four children. For five years I worked from home as a Medical Transcriptionist. In 2005 I was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer. Had surgery and an aggressive course of chemo. As with most things, there are side effects involved. In my case, I have limited usage of my hands as feet and therefore have not worked since being diagnosed. Then there was a series of complications which I am just getting over with and what do I find out?? You guessed it, the darn cancer is back again. I beat the nasty monster once and I will do it again. 2009 Went to the oncologist early spring and found out that the cancer is not curable and therefore, terminal. No idea of a timeline. I do know that as of 09/2005 I was given a 28% chance of making it five years. Looks like that will happen, but how much more, who knows. All I know is that I thank God every morning I wake up and make the most of every day. Things have not been all bad, my kids are a great help and I have my puppy. She really isn't a puppy anymore, but my companion. I can talk to her about anything and she doesn't judge me at all. June 2010 I cannot believe my "baby boys" are graduating, one from high school and one from college, not to mention, the younger is with honors!! When I was diagnosed with cancer back in August/2005, I was afraid I wouldn't be here for this. But it seems the cancer growth has been halted for the time being and all I have to do is take a little pill every morning. I hate the way it makes me feel, crabby, moody and joint pain. However, if it is not taken, the tumor will grow again, o it looks like there is not much choice in the matter other than just dealing with it. The doctors are trying to find the right combinatio...Expand for more
n of meds to help with the issues. December 2010 It is Christmas once again and another milestone has been made. In September 2005, I was given a 28% chance of living another five years. There are good days and bad, and then days where I wish it were all over with. Not too many of those thank heavens. My quarterly oncology visit went fairly well, however my tumor marker was slightly elevated. Went for a CT scan of the chest ,abdomen and pelvis. It was found to be normal when compared to the others. Now it is going to be a PET scan to get a different type of view to make sure nothing is going on. The kids and I are still living in Canton and in fact have taken one more in. One of my youngest sons friends was finding it very difficult to live at home anymore, so he became a part of our family also. What a good kid. He was explained my situation and the do's and don'ts allowed in my home as well as the consequences should he break one of the rules. It's been three months so far and just a few minor adjustments have been needed. In going through my foster parent training many years ago, I remember them talking about the "honeymoon" period. That never really pertained to me because my "kids' were always infants. We will see what the next few months bring, but I suspect they will be somewhat the same. MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.! August 2011 In June I was diagnosed yet again with cancer (my third recurrence). The doctors discussed it with me and my decision was to do radiation therapy this time. It was the best with the least amount of side effects. When I was diagnosed the first time, we had to do surgery, which was then followed by three months of chemo. The side effects were permanent and extremely bothersome. But I am still alive. More later!!!
