Deborah's Story

I always wanted to be a Astronaut when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were right. I snuggle up in bed with my 2 dogs, some good pizza, and a couple glasses of a good sparkling wine. Turn of the lights and enjoy the show. If I'm going to work somewhere, you need to have a good attitude, good work ethics, and patience to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I have lots of Hero's, as a retired Police Officer, Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency workers, and the men and women in the Armed Services do good work in tough situations. For all they are seen doing in the public eye, there are about a great number of things that are being done that are unseen by the public. So next time you see a Police Officer, Firefighter, EMT,or someone in the Armed Services, say "Thank You" The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Nikki Harris, because We were great friends when we were younger.. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. The biggest surprise in my life was becoming a Police Officer at the age of 45. Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks. While at the Police academy, I was 3rd in a class of 42, maintaining a 3.9 grade point average, which by the way is a lot better than I ever did in High School. I worked in Patrol, having a brief stint as a Detective in the Crimes Against Children division, but went back to Patrol, working 3rd shift (10pm - 8am) which I loved. I fully expected to have a 20 year career, unfortunately I was involved in a Motor Vehicle Accident (M.V.A.) in March of 2004 while responding to an Officer Down...Expand for more
Call. I ended up injuring 2 disc's in my back and had to have back surgery, which ended my career. I have been retired since 2005, and am enjoying life as a retiree. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the 2nd bathroom and add on an addition to my master bedroom. My dream home would be a two story 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage home.. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to charity, then spend the rest on my family, home improvement and put the rest in savings. My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. My best friend would tell you I'm shy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as stuck-up. I share my home with my doggies, which I find comforting, but exasperating at times. You get one do-over. What do I do differently? In 1972, when I was 22 y.o.a, I had intentions in enlisting in the Navy. I had everything done but the "I do", but during the medical examination they found that I had a urine infection. All I had to do was get medication and take care of the condition. But I didn't, and never completed the enlistment. Having said that, I believe all things happen for a reason, and because of that other things happened in my life which eventually brought me to Lexington Kentucky, where I became a Police Officer. In 10 years, I hope to be good health. I'm going to get there by eating healthy, and exercising. My first job was at Bro-Dart, where I got paid 1.65 an hour to enter data via a keypunch machine. What I remember most about it is that at the time, I thought that was good pay..
