Deborah's Story

Having been a member (and even President) of South High's Future Teachers of America, I was prepared to do my five years of college and enter the ranks of secondary teachers. In 1968, I did my duty and married an American soldier so he could have a loyal wifey waiting at home. And I waited, but that did not work out. I made it through college with a double major in English and Theater Arts. In my teaching- credential, fifth year, I managed to still be cast in plays while I student-taught during the day. Eight weeks before I would get my credential, I was cast in a Vegas-bound improv comedy revue . So I quit the teaching program! I never looked back, never had any remorse, just followed my new path. I met my second (and last) husband while working in improv. I tried to hook him up with Kathy Duncan, who said, "From the way you talk about him, I think you should keep him for yourself." I will be grateful to Kathy the rest of my life. Dave, former Rolling Hills High surfer, was a teddy bear of a guy with a great sense of humor and a gorgeous singing voice. For awhile, we took turns working "regular jobs" while the other partner went to auditions and casting calls. When I started to work on network and studio productions, Dave decided he'd get the day job. He was tired of auditions. As I got more work, I realized I didn't want to be an a...Expand for more
ctress; I wanted to be behind the camera. I wrote commercials, ad copy, and worked in network casting. I traveled the country looking for dance couples for "Dance Fever," and helped train Alex Trebek to be the host of the new, improved Jeopardy. When I was between jobs, I was a substitute teacher in Torrance. (No credential required to sub.) That led me to write two books which were incorporated in the curriculum at middle schools. For many years, we were in a vocal group that participated in mass concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Surfer Dave taught me how to boogie board, which we did every chance we could. We moved to Bear Valley Springs in the Tehachapi Mountains and lived there for 27 years. I volunteered at a big cat compound in Rosamond. Dave golfed, we both sang, and since we weren't near the beach anymore, we went to Mexico every year for five weeks of waves. I wrote a book about a Bengal Tiger preservation program in Mexico that we were a part of for fourteen years. In 2020, I lost Dave to COPD and congestive heart failure. We had been planning to move to Oahu, but he never made it. In 2021, I decided to finish our story by moving to Oahu alone. I arrived on December 29th, wearing a tee shirt that said, "Failure Is Not An Option." It was not an easy move, but this is where I belong. Love, aloha, and shaka everyone!
