Deborah's Story
After graduating from Eastwood High School, I attended the University of Texas at Austin on a Scripps-Howard journalism scholarship. Met a handsome hippie carpenter, dropped out of school, and moved to Durango, Colo., to become a hippie chick ski bum. That didn't last long. Returned to school at Fort Lewis College where I earned my bachelor's degree in Humanities. I was editor of the college paper, and that landed me my first job -- starting a weekly newspaper in a small farming community just east of Durango. Next job came along two years later, when I joined The Durango Herald as a general assignment reporter. Great years, too. Won some writing and reporting awards and learned all about the Four Corners Region. I next worked as the media relations director for Purgatory Ski Resort, where I met my husband of 22 years. He is a former ski god ski patrol kinda dude. So I learned to ski really well. I was then hired by my alma mater -- Fort Lewis College -- as the Director of...Expand for more
College Relations. Stayed there 13 years, then joined Durango School District 9-R where I worked for 7 years before my early retirement. Yep, friends, I'm collecting a pension but still must work. So now I work 20 hours a week as the marketing and development director for a small community-access television station in Durango. Think Wayne's World on steroids, only more professional. My "real" life revolves around uber-champagne-camping, cooking, my dog, my cats, and skiing with spousal unit of 22 years. In fact, that's what I'm doing now. Hanging out until the ski season starts!
No kids; I'm a born-again pagan, and a day without a margarita is a really bad day.
My sister Kathy who was a freshman when we were seniors, now lives in Durango with her husband, Mark O'Quinn, and a wonderful daughter. She's more successful professionally than I am -- but I'm still the better skier. (No sibling rivalry here!)
Hope to reconnect with some of you from the Class of 1974.
