After graduating from Eastwood High School, I attended the University of Texas at Austin on a Scripps-Howard journalism scholarship. Met a handsome hippie carpenter, dropped out of school, and moved to Durango, Colo., to become a hippie chick ski bum. That didn't last long. Returned to school at Fort Lewis College where I earned my bachelor's degree in Humanities. I was editor of the college paper, and that landed me my first job -- starting a weekly newspaper in a small farming community just east of Durango. Next job came along two years later, when I joined The Durango Herald as a general assignment reporter. Great years, too. Won some writing and reporting awards and learned all about the Four Corners Region. I next worked as the media relations director for Purgatory Ski Resort, where I met my husband of 22 years.
