Debra's Story
Life
I was born in Punta Gorda, Florida, on January 13, 1962. I went to Sallie Jones Elementary, Punta Gorda Middle School, and Charlotte High School, where I graduated in 1980. In 1978, I started working, part-time, for the Tax Collector, Vic Desguin, in the Tax Department. In the summer before my Senior Year, I started in the Tag and Title Department. After graduation from High School, I went on working there, now working full time. In March of 1986, I met Mike Sackett, and we were married on August 2, 1986. On January 29, 1988, I had our daughter, Michele Sackett. Then about a year and a half later, I found out my husband was still married to someone else, so we separated. A few years later, I bought a house for Michele and I. In 1999, my father passed away, and about 5 months later, Michele and I moved in with my mom. My brother, Dennis, and his wife, Diane, moved into my house, where they are still living. Michele is now 17 years old and is very active in the Auxiliary Guard at Charlotte High School. I am very proud of her and she keeps me very busy! I am now working full time at the Punta ...Expand for more
Gorda Wal-Mart in the Cash Office, and I also work part-time for a Psychiatrist, Dr. Gauta. He's almost ready to retire, so his office is only open on Tuesday's and Thursday's. I worked for the Tax Collector almost 20 years full-time before I was let go "without cause." When the new Tax Collector, Vickie Potts, was voted in, she had everyone sign a paper stating that we could be let go "without cause," and she had a lot of fun "cleaning house" with a lot of the older employees--and I happened to be one of the lucky ones! After that, I worked at Waste Management for a year and a half and I was let go from there due to "Corporate Downsizing!" I started working at Wal-Mart in May of 2001, as a cashier, then I worked for a couple of months overnight, then I worked in the Garden Center before I went into the Cash Office. I love working at Wal-Mart. Michele keeps me very busy, so I really don't have a lot of free time. Plus, we had a lot of damage to our house from Hurricane Charley on August 13, 2004, so we're really busy trying to get things back in order from that. But it seems like it's taking forever!
