Debra's Story
Life
With the peace demonstrations and "America love it or leave it" campaigns of the late 60's and 70's I left NFA and volunteered for a four-year tour of active duty in the US Navy as an Interior Communications Electrician. Little did I know at the time that this protest stance would set the tone of my life from then on. After the birth of my only child (Edmond) in 1977, I transferred to the US Naval Reserve where I served happily for an additional 18 years until my retirement in 1996.
I worked briefly for SNET between 1979 and 1980 in an entry level "Directory Assistance" job finding it both unrewarding and maddeningly unstimulating. I decided to leave and engage in a part time career as a photographer (Jacobs Freelance Photography) while continuing the academic career I attempted to pursue while on active duty in the Navy. I say attempted because every time I'd get transferred to another duty station none of my previous credits would transfer to the new school. November of 1980...Expand for more
my Mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, I left school to help care for her and we lost her in March 1981.
I accepted a position in the Public Works Dept. of the US Naval Submarine Base New London in 1987 as a journeyman electrician. I was not to return to school again until the fall 1992. Nothing could stop me now! During my collegiate career I had four degrees conferred upon me in seven years as follows: From Thames Valley State Technical College (Three Rivers) an Associate In Science, in General Engineering, and an Associate in Applied Science in Industrial Supervision and Management. From Eastern Connecticut State University a Bachelor in Science in Business Administration, and a Master of Science in Organizational Management. As for work, I'm still working for the Navy, I've worked my way up to the position of Director of the Weight Handling and Elevator Branch, of the Facilities Management Engineering Division.
My plan is to teach (college level) when I retire in 2009.
