Debra Jensen Lamson's Story

I hit this site several months ago and just didn't stop long enough to really see what was happening here. It is amazing that after all these years of thinking that you would never see any high school friends again ever as long as you live and then in one day you find that there are alot of folks out there, wondering the same thing. Overnight, your hit with names and faces of people that sound like you should know them and you have to get your old high school annual out and you go Yea! I know you! I felt like I had friends again. I haven't had time for friends for so many years because of my job. how fun is this! So with that said, I guess it is time that I told my story. Since I graduated in 1971 I went off to college to Boston Mass and went to an all girl college. I promise it was not boring in any way what so ever. I think they shipped every crazy nut case from around the country to this school because these girls were freaks. Boy did I think I knew everything, I found out I had lived a pretty sheltered life at that point. (These are stories for another day) It really was a great stay there and I loved the big city, after having lived in Oscoda it was pretty overwhelming at first. The best part was seeing some great concerts and hitch hiking around beautiful New England with some really adventurous girls. After college graduation I had to decide to stay or come back home. I did neither..the president of my college was married to a woman from Alabama and they talked me into moving south where I could continue my education and all my college credits would transfer. I also got a reduced tuition because of her connections to the college I transfered to. (Saved me alot of money)! I transfered to Athens Alabama and what a cultural shock that was! I was woke up each morning by a hugh rooster out my dorm room window, and this was in downtown. The place was beautiful when the cotton fields were in bloom but you could see a cow or two in the middle of the road stopping traffic on any given day. I remember picking some cotton and sending it home to mom and Shellie. But not before a policeman stopped me for trespassing and wanted me to pay my fine with a "yankee dime" (a kiss). The worst part about the south was living in the bible belt. The county was a dry county and when my family came to see me they were stunned that you couldn't buy a beer. You had to travel great distances, sometimes to another state to do so. Something that I will never forget when I first moved there was the courthouse was in the middle of the town. The water fountain in the courtyard in 1973 still had a sign on each side, one side said "whites only" you can guess what the other side had. We would go to Tennesee to a small club to hang out on weekends and the front of the place was for whites only while the blacks had to go to a room at the back of the club and order drinks from a small window. They didn't even have a waitress. I always wondered what their side looked like, how funny is that. After graduation from Athens College I went to work in a health club while I waited to get a teaching job. I met my first husband Pat Lessor and settled into married bliss. Later I taught school for awhile and soon realized I wanted to do more so I went into Recreation where I could teach the classes I wanted to and work on being healthy at the same time. I was a recreation programer and I became a swim coach, the job I am most known for in Alabama. I worked in Athens for 10 years worked my way up to Recreation Director the last four years I was there. I also took time to have my first child in 1984. I had a son named Aaron. my life. But, being the boss meant I had to give up the things I loved to do and the stress of southern politics made my being home with the family an unhealthy challenge. So I divorced my first husband and moved across the state to Guntersville Alabama where I went back to programing special events and swim coaching which is and always has been my passion. Here I met my second husband Windale and we have been married for twenty years now. He had a son that grew up in our household the same age as Aaron, both now 25 and we have a son together. Gabriel is 18 now and just graduated from high school in 2009. Guntersville is alot like Oscoda. It is a pennsula and you have to cross a big brdge to get into the city. It is located on the Tennessee River and is in the foothills of the Great Smokey Moutains. (Yes there are hillbillys). It is really quite breathtaking especially at this time of year when the trees are changing colors. I still work in Recreation doing special events like triathlons, 10K Runs, festivals and concerts ect. I program activities and classes like karate, Ballroom Dances and pottery classes. In the summer I am the swim coach and Aquatics Director for one of the largest teams in Alabama. We have between 100 and 150 swimmers. I have been fortunate enough to coach a swimmer that held a top 16 time in the nation at 12 years old. Unfortunatly she aged out of the program this past year. I also have been coaching for the High School here the last couple of years. It all sounds so busy and it is so its not surprising that I am ready to retire. Make that real soon if possible. I am tired of living everyone elses dreams and ready to do some things I want to do like travel and spend time with my three grandaughters. One of which lives in California. I feel that I have had a very rewarding career and have impacted the lives of alot of young people over the past 30 years but it is time to move onto the next chapter in my life. I am very ready for something new! Over the years one thing has always been the same. I have come home to Oscoda for Christmas every year since the day I graduated. My mother and Sister (Shelly ) have passed away but my dad still lives their. It is a family tradition to go there and enjoy the snow, hang out at the Ausable Inn and eat all the foods I can't get in the south. I have come across a few friends over the years but not as many as i had hoped. Shellies funeral was the closest thing to a reunion for me. That is the last time I have seen so many good friends at one time. I have never been able to come home for a class reunion because they were usually in the summer months and that was my prime working time. My vacations have always been at Christmas. I hope that in my retirement I will be able to make a reunion before it is to late to see everyone again. My husband and I have spent the last few years working on the road away from each other so it looks like a divorce is in the near future. I hope connecting with old friends who have interesting stories of their own will be just what I need to move forward now that my family is all grown up and gone. This profile is a work in progress so please check back and I would love to hear from everyone. I can talk to a wall as you can tell but I truely would love to reconnect with my northern roots. I always say I hate tecnology because I'm so illterate but Its really because I hate change. I finally figured out that as my life is changeing tecnology will be what makes the quality of that life all the more worth living. By keeping friends as close as the touch of the keys. Keep God in your heart and share your blessings, Always, Debby
