Debra's Story

Life My Bio . . . not a real page-turner, but. . . . After graduating from BCHS, I packed up my '64 Mustang and relocated to the incredible city of Seattle. Fours year later, with diploma in hand, (a Bachelors degree in Socio-Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology from the Univ of Washington), I took time off and traveled to Europe and the Middle East. It was an incredible trip. I immersed myself into the life and culture of the Egypitan people and marveled at the architecture of Venice, Milan, Istanbul and Morocco. Having fullfilled one of my life's dreams, I returned to Seattle. Fifth year studies, my job, and student loans were calling. Graduating with a degree in Anthroplogy/Archaeology, one would think I'd be working in a museum or diggin' up arifacts at an archaeological site? Nope, not me. I started working full-time for a company in Seattle while I was a Senior at the U. I worked full-time (while going to school full-time) through my fifth year of graduate studies. Nearly 29 years later, I'm still with the same company! I've progressively moved up the ladder and am now an Applications Support Specialist/Trainer for our on-line systems. Quite an undertaking for someone who vowed never to become involved in the world of computers! The system development process helps to quench my thirst for knowledge & the training process keeps me involved with the "real people". People fascinate me. Being able to share my knowledge and learn from them in return is my idea of an ideal position. In 1996, I married, at the ripe old age of 42, a guy with two kids. We met through a personal ad I placed in the local newspaper. It took me 2 hours to compose and six months to get up the nerve to actually place it in the paper. Steve's a software engineer with an electrical engineering background. Not really a computer geek, but often speaks a language completly foreign to me. Things were great up until the summer of 2002 when the high tech industry in the Pacif...Expand for more
ic Northwest took a nose-dive. Steve's company closed it's doors and unemployment hit our household. Nine months after being laid off, the FBI came knocking - with a job offer in hand. Forget about trying to hide any life secrets! The background search is greuling. Not only do they delve into the life history of the prospective employee, but his family and friends are subject to intense scrutiny as well. I don't know if they ever found out about the time . . . . . The great thing about the job was what it involved - Cyber Technology. The bad thing was, he had to relocate to Virginia. So, we are a two-house couple having a bi-coastal marriage. The days of taking the Gold Wing out for a weekend ride are long past, having been replaced by red-eye flights between Seattle and Washington DC. Hopefully the job market here will change soon. Steve really wants to move back to Seattle. His two girls (ages 16 and 13) live here with their Mother and step-father,and being away from them is his most difficult challenge. Hence the reason behind my not relocating to Virginia. At least not yet. Steve in Virginia and me in Seattle - it's almost like being single again. The house stays clean and the toilet seat is always down! Family is paramount in my life. My parents & my brother with his family still live in Colorado. I return, at a minimum, every July and December - just like a migrating bird. I love my time at "home" and it gets more difficult to leave at the end of each visit. My sister (Annette) and her family, live in the 'burbs outside of Chicago. Youngest sister, Charlotte, was also drawn to the Pacific Northwest. She's a Hydrology Field Engineer living just south of Seattle. We never have enough opportunities to get together. Sometimes growing up really sucks! Guess that's about it. Like I said, not a real page turner, but it's my life; one I'm happy with. I've accepted challenges, realized dreams and over come hardships. Life is good . . . .
