Debra's Story
Life
After high school I married Alvin Shirley and had 2 wonderful children. We moved to Oklahoma in 1975 where I coached soccer for my daughter and continued my education. In 1985, after my divorce I moved to Fort Worth, TX and began building a new life. It's great here in Texas but I still remember growing up in MO and how much bigger the trees were (not everything in TX is bigger). It seems I have finally reached a place in my life where my confidence has bloomed and I feel good about where my life is. Being single used to make me afraid, but after many years of kissing toads only to have them turn into snakes, I'm happy to answer to no one and to do as I please, as I want to. Don't get me wrong; its great having companionship, but it is even greater that I can send them home. Here's to 2005, it looks like it's going to be a good year.
School
Alvin Shirley was my biggest crush in high school; in the opposite way he was my biggest crush when we went our separate ways. The teacher I think inspired me most was my math teacher, Mr. Takahashi. He was cute and smart and I loved his class. The teacher that inspired me most because I wanted to prove him wrong was Mr. ...Expand for more
Bredbinner, the drafting instructor. Back then, as you all know, girls just didn't take shop and when I tried Mr. Bredbinner was so abrasive that I gave up. I'm happy to say I went on to take many Architectural and Mechanical Engineering classes that I received A's in. Thanks Mr. Bredbinner for not being more supportive of me as a student, I might not have worked so hard to spite you later on and I might not be doing as well as I am today.Funny moments? There were so many. At that time I was young and vampire movies were big and to me very scary.I remember Beverly Shanks and I walking from St Peter's to Harvester because Alvin and Keith Voght would not let us play ball with the guys, and darn it we were not just going to sit and watch them flex their muscles. So off we went just as it was getting dark. Two tough young ladies determined to make their ability to be independent known. It took us about 1/2 mile to realize that was not the best plan we had ever come up with. We were so scared walking down old 94 hwy that we sang church songs as loud as we could in case a vampire might be lurking in the bushes. That was the longest walk I can remember and I still laugh about it.
