Debra's Story

Hmmm...after going to music school for a semester and figuring it wasn't for me (neither the classes or the city life), I cast around for a couple of years and ended up working in Iowa and then Wisconsin. I married my husband in 1978 and we are still married with 3 children (29,22,and 17 yo) and 1 grandchild. We homeschooled all 3 children through high school. One is graduated from UW Mdison , another is a senior at UC Denver, and our youngest is in her first semester of graphic design at the local community college. We have lived near Madison, WI all these years in a rural area. I graduated from nursing school in 1980 and have worked as an R.N. I presently work with severely retarded individuals at the state institiution. In the past I have worked in obstetrics, pediatrics and pediatric allergy. My husband builds and restores furniture. I think we'll be doing something similar for quite a few more years since we have spent our time raising a family and not accumulating wealth. I have played music off and on over the years. Presently I'm off, but am waiting for a chance to break out the Irish flute I got a couple of years ago when life slows down a bit. Other than that I garden, swim, hike and forage the half of the year it isn't frozen or snowy, and spend a lot of time outside running the dog, cooking, and reading during the winter. We used to ski a lot, but haven't made time for that for...Expand for more
a couple of years now. My family still lives in CA and AZ and my husband's family in WI. We visit when we can. I miss the ocean a lot. Our lakes and rivers make up for that a bit. 2024 update: Our kids are grown and launched. Our oldest is head of an English as Second Language department at a Mexican University (we enjoy visiting him in the wilds of the Oaxacan mountains). Our middle child has his degree in film but mainly works as an electrician in NYstate. Our youngest is a librarian at Cornell University in NYstate. We visit them in tandem on occasion. We still have just one grandchild (13yo). The past four years I spent as a Covid nurse as our short term intermediate rehab facility for developmentally disabled individuals (most who are also severely physically handicapped) was turned into a Covid unit. It was a LOT of work. The past year we began taking community rehab admissions once again, but seesawed between those and Covid upswings. Kind of crazy times, but the time flew by as 12 and 16 hr shifts were the norm. Mostly I just worked and recovered from work. In spite of being exposed multiple times I never have contracted Covid myself. I decided to retire mid December 2023 as I had been a nurse for 43+ years. I am enjoying seeing blizzards roll in and not having to manage to get to work and back! I'm hoping to garden and have time to myself once more. Time will tell what else I do!
