Debra's Story

Life I moved to Kokomo when I married my late husband and I stayed after he died. I was a 34 year old widow with two teenage sons to raise. Kokomo seemed like a safe place to do that. This is were I met my present husband so I am glad I stayed! Dave and I will be married 11 years on April 8th, 2006. The longer I live here, the more I like the slower pace! My sons are both grown and on their own! I can't believe it! My oldest son, Rob, is 26 and married (Annie) and lives in California! I am someone's mother-in-law! LOL! My youngest son, Case, is 25 and here in Kokomo, works hard and has his own place now. I also have two grown step-children (Brooke and Deron) and 2 step-grandsons, Tyler who is 10 years old and Dalton, who is 1. I'm a 46 year old Grandma! I can't believe how time has flown by! I have been a cosmetologist for 21 years and am now retired. I enjoy spending time with my best friend, Terri Joyce-Kincaid (WC class of 1976) We have been friends for 30 years, married buddies and live 10 minutes apart! I also spend a lot of time at the YMCA. I love to swim and run on the treadmill. I teach water aerobics 3 nights a week there. (I'm not the same fat girl I was in high school!) My dad had to sell the house on Kitley Ave in 2005 and now lives with my older sister. His health is not good. My mom died in May 2001. My husband is an Electronics Analyst at Delphi here in Kokomo. He's been there for 30 years. I would LOVE to hear from old classmates! I love communicating with others and have some fond memories of my time at Warren Central. I wish I had it to do over again! I would get so much more involved! I used to be kinda shy and kept to myself alot. I have definately outgrown that and now I am one of the most outgoing people I know! Funny how life molds and shapes us. Despite some hardships, I have truly been blessed in my life and I wish the same for all of you! School When I was in high school, all I could think about was getting out of school as soon as possible! I was a bit of a loner and just did the bare minimun in the way of homework to get by. I was very smart but didn't want anyone to know about it as it would increase my level of responsibility! LOL! Ya gotta love teenagers! I was so smart, I even managed to get myself into Remedial Government so that I could gradua...Expand for more
te with a minimun of effort! LOL! In 1993, after taking the proctored test, I was invited to, and did join MENSA, a club for people with high IQ's. Don't tell Mrs.Ludwig, who was my government teacher and also one of my favorites! LOL! Mr. Nesbit was one of my all time favorites. Even if he did give me my first spanking in first grade at Moorhead Elementary! And took points off my grade in driver's ed for snapping my gum too loud and gave me an F on my health and saftey test in 8th grade at Woodview J.H.S. I literally grew up with that man! When I worked part time in the kitchen at Warren Central for a short time in 1992, I served him his lunches! He still remembered me! Even though I was then a married adult with two kids of my own, I just couldn't make myself call him Gene! He will always be Mr. Nesbit to me. First thing I did after high school was get married and have two sons, 14 months apart! I had my hands full for quite some time. When they got out of diapers, I went to cosmetology school and got my license to be a hairdresser. That is what I have done ever since. I sometimes wish I would have applied myself more in school. But ya can't dwell on the what if's. My life has been good and I have been blessed. Workplace I have been a hairdresser for 21 years. I started as a Junior Instructor at the Acadamy of Hair Care in Indianapolis, In. Then. I went to work for BoRics. I left there after about a year and started my own business. I did that for about 8 years and then moved up here to Kokomo. I am now retired from hairdressing but I still maintain my skills and keep my liscense "active". I worked too hard for it and you never know when I might need it again! I work as a water aerobics instructor for the YMCA and I am active in the American Red Cross. I recently spent 5 weeks in Louisiana, helping with the hurricanes Rita and Katrina relief efforts. I was a Staff Shelter Manager and a Client Caseworker. It was VERY rewarding work and really helped me put things in perspective. I will NEVER forget my time there and plan to stay active in my local chapter. I am a member of the Disaster Action Team here in my community. We respond to local disasters such as floods, fires and tornados. I REALLY love helping others. I just wish I had joined sooner in my life. Better late than never!
