Debra's Story

Life After working/attending Del Mar for a few semesters, I married Sterling Welch, (Carroll '73) in '76; we've been happily married since. Three kids arrived between '77-'81 keeping me very busy until they were all in school (then it REALLY got busy). After 14 years in NM/West TX we moved back to College Station in 1991, where we'd lived briefly while Sterling finished at TAMU in '77. I received my BS in Biochemistry at TAMU in '94. After 7+ years working in a molecular biology lab, I left there in Sept. '01 to work at home running our rental business and keeping my grandson while his parents worked and went to school. I have since gone back to work full-time at the same lab. My son-in-law finished his Master's in Architecture in August '04, and took a job in Fort Worth, so I am having withdrawal-from-grandson symptoms. So far we still see them often, and Fort Worth is just a few hours drive, so I guess I'll survive. Sterling manages a CPA branch office, which makes me a CPA-widow much of the year, but I've had plenty of years to get used to that. We are trying to learn to play golf (while still retaining some sense of dignity) in case we have spare time to actually get to play some day. I enjoy gardening, fiber-art hobbies, reading and genealogical pursuits. Our grandson, Ethan, was born in May 2001, and belongs to our younger daughter, Katy, and her husband Paul. Our eldest child, son Kevin (TAMU '00), was married August 3, 2002. He and his wife Margaret (TAMU '01) are living in Bryan where he is a Loan Processing Mgr for World Savings and she is in client support for Universal Computer Systems. They are hoping to start a family soon. Bring on more grandkids!!!! Middle child, daughter Melissa, lives with us while she finishes nursing school. After a couple brief times when the nest was empty, we are looking forward to that on a permanent basis, some day... Well, that's the bare-bones story of 29 years packed with new experiences, adventures, tragedies, joys & the usual humdrumness too. I try to start each day as if it were the first of the rest of my life, but I usually end up thinking, "I'll start tomorrow"! After my God and Lord Jesus Christ, my family is most precious to me: a husband who loves me unconditionally, three "kids" beginning their own lives, and a beautiful grandson who makes me remember what life is all about...I try to reflect often on how rich I really am. I wish joy for all of you; if you're at a low point, I pray God will carry you through. I know he will if you let him. If anyone remembers me and wants to say "Hi", please do! I was sort of quiet in HS, but that's changed some too. Besides, I have to get some feedback to make it worth the upgrade! School Born in Corpus, I went to Windsor Park Elementary, and Cullen Jr. High before King. I was pretty much on the "shy" or "quiet" side during all my school years, my main extra-curricular being ...Expand for more
drill team in high school. I've "loosened up" quite a bit since then; I guess beginning the downhill slide to fifty has taught me to stop waiting and start living, no matter what anyone else thinks! My friends are probably sometimes a little frustrated when they can hardly get a word in edgewise, so I try to have a glass of wine before conversational settings to slow myself down a little! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I am trying to be a better listener. College Went to Del Mar for three semesters beginning in January, 1975. We were on the tri-mester system for a few years at King, so I actually graduated in Nov. '74. I was also working at a women's clothing store in THE mall (Padre-Staples - what else?), eventually moving up to manager by the time I was 18, and as my work hours went up, my school hours went down each semester. After getting married in '76 and pregnant in '77, I put college days behind me for a while. I started back at Midland College, Midland, Texas, in about '88, and enrolled at A&M when we moved to College Station in '91. Finally revved up to full-time student the last year or so and finished a BS in Biochem in '94. I had hated biology in high school; never took chemistry, trig, or calculus until A&M. Boy, was that a challenge! Thought I'd frame my diploma as soon as I got it, but it's still in the tube nine years later. Husband ('77), son (2000) and I all have our Aggie rings now; we're still waiting to see if the girls will eventually get theirs. Workplace I've had quite a few jobs... McDonald's (3 wks), civil service at CC Naval Base, dress shop in the mall (sales clerk to mgr), secretary at TAEX on A&M campus in College Station, Avon sales rep in NM, teacher's aide at 6th grade school in W. Tx. (actually turned out to be head librarian), co-owned, co-managed a craft store, and receptionist/secretary for my husband while he was self-employed in financial planning in Midland for three years. After graduating A&M in '94, I obtained my longest-lived "career" so far, working in animal genetics (and getting to use my degree in biochemistry), which I began the Monday after grad'n and quit in Sept. '01 to work from home, which I really love. I now babysit my grandson on a 4-to-5-day-a-week basis (actually qualifies as volunteer work!), and I am the co-owner and property manager of my husband's and my residential real estate rental business. I do miss my latest former job at times, but I'm able to use many of the documentation and people skills I developed there on this one, and I have found that I have a knack for being in property mgmt and do enjoy it. I have always wanted to work from home at something so that I have the flexibility to keep the homefires burning (or at least keep the emergency ones put out) while working on a part-time basis most of the time (not counting babysitting). I do like my boss better than any others I've had!
