Dee's Story

Since I graduated from Morton, I received a diploma in nursing from Little Company of Mary Hospital School of nursing, BS from College of St Francis, BSN from Illinois Benedictine College, MSN from DePaul University, and a PhD from Loyola University. I attended schools at night, while I worked during the day as an RN in the operating room. As an RN, I was a staff nurse, private scrub, manager, supervisor, Perioperative Clinical Nurse Specialist, Director of Surgical Services, and a Vice President of Nursing. I taught at the U of I in Chicago for 7 years and NIU for 3 years. I have been married 3 times. It took me that long to get it right.. I met my husband in the Navy 24 years ago in the operating room at Bremerton, Washington. We were both doing our annual AT with the Naval Reserves. He is a retired Navy doc (Captain- 06) (anesthesiologist). I was a Lieutenant Commander - 03). I left Arlington Heights and NIU and moved to Vancouver, Washington to be married. I taught at Pacific Lutheran University and University of Portland for a few years, while he was working at Oregon Health Sciences University. When he retired, I was recruited by Winston Salem State in North Carolina, so we moved. I taught at WSSU for 3 years and transferred to A and T state University, where I finally retired, as an Associate Professor. The heat and humidity were way too much for me, so we finally sold our house (had been on the market for 3 years) and moved to Idaho. What a trip....We sold the house Thanksgiving 2015. We drove the 43 ft. RV with two small dogs (Peyton and Regan- Coton de tulear) through 3 white outs (blizzards) in Dumas, Texas, Denver to Salt Lake City, and into Coeur d' Alene. By the Grace of God, we made it without any difficulty. Many times, we had to stop on...Expand for more
the highway and clean the windshield wipers in order to remove the ice. Alex and I have been married 21 years and frankly, I don't know how he puts up with me. He is a saint. He served, as an anesthesiologist during Viet Nam and I think that is why he has profound patience and in an emergency, he is soooooo calm. We built a home in Athol, Idaho. We are only 87 miles South of Canada. We traveled in our RV about 6 months of the year and now we are just taking short trips in the RV. I believe that my professional life was a hard work in progress and a success, but my personal life left much to be desired. I adopted an infant with my first husband and when she was 5 years old, we divorced. I had residential custody, but he made it very difficult. When she was 14, her and I had a fallout. As a result, she went to live with her father in New York and eventually moved to Texas. I haven't seen her since she was 16 and she is now 39. I, believe that I have a grandson (10) and a grandaughter (5). I still do some teaching....I teach online graduate school (nursing) for Thomas Edison State University in Trenton, New Jersey. I have been doing this concurrently with all my other teaching jobs. With the advent of online learning, I taught myself how to manuever, even though I am still not fully comfortable with this venue. It keeps my brain working. My husband has 5 grown sons all on the West Coast, 10 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, so we are kept pretty busy. We did alpine ski, cross country ski, some figure skating, travel in the RV, and I cross stitch, play sudoku, and lovvvvvve to read. My mantra is....if I still have a heart beat and am breathing, it is going to be a good day. Everything hurts, but you just keep pushing. What is the alternative?! :-)
