DeeAnn's Story

Life Life since high school. Wow! Grad. from Ill. St. Univ. in 1978 w/B.S. in Hist. & Psych. Worked for a year in Ill. before obtaining my Paralegal Certificate at Roosevelt Univ. in Chicago. Moved to Dallas, Tx. in 1979. Married a native Texan, Keith Ellis, in 1984, moved to Waxahachie, Texas in 1987. Two sons, Sean and Sheldon, born 1988 and 1991. Am currently office manager and Sr. paralegal for local attorney and love it. I also enjoy being an independent beauty consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics. My sons are athletic and most free time is spent going to and from practices or games - football and soccer mostly. My biggest accomplishment, probably cliche, but I think I've raised two great boys (of course, they're still in progress.) Complete surprises - I moved to Texas, far from home, without looking back once. Also earned a brown belt in Jujitsu. Never saw myself as a martial artist. How I've changed - I'm much more self confident than I ever was in high school. School Not sure what they want here. Our senior yearbook pretty much tells all. I enjoyed my high school years, though I certainly would not want to do them again. College I graduated from Illinois State University in 1978 with double majors in History and Psychology. I worked for one year in Lake Forest as a personnel assistant, then went to Roosevelt University in Chicago to obtain my Paralegal Certificate. After completion, I moved to Texas, where I continued various college courses -- once toward an MBA (uncomple...Expand for more
ted) and once toward a degree in court reporting (uncompleted). During my years at ISU, I was a member of the Gamma Phi Circus, a honorary gymnastics circus fraternity. I was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority; however, am no longer an active member. Workplace During my high school and college days, I did everything from house cleaning to clothing store retail - Weiboldt's Department Store, Langworthy's in Libertyville, store manager for the Merry Menagerie gift shop at 6 Flags the first year they opened in Gurnee (of course it was Great American at that time), prep cook at the Howard Johnson's, Lake Forest Oasis over the tollroad. My first real job after college was as a personnel assistant at Hansen & Associates. After returning to school and obtaining my paralegal certificate, I moved to Texas -- fall of 1979. My main occupation since moving here has been as a paralegal. I've worked with two insurance defense firms in Dallas and one plaintiff's firm. I spent about a year as a corporate paralegal, but that was NO FUN! The vast majority of my time, 16 years, was spent with a court reporting firm in Dallas as their Records Dept. manager. My current position is as office manager and senior paralegal for a local Waxahachie attorney. My office is five minutes from my home, which I love. It's fun, my employer is great and is very family oriented. I also have my own business as an independent beauty consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics. I hope to retire doing these last two careers.
