Della's Story
I left Draper to attend Nortre Dame High School in my sophomore & junior years. In 1963, my family moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where my dad worked for GE in the space industry. I graduated from Huntsville High School in June 1964. That fall I started college at The University of North Alabama (a liberal arts college.) After 1 year I dropped out not caring for liberal arts. I went to work at Huntsville Hospital working for the Assistant Director of Nursing who encouraged me to go into the medical profession. I decided to go to x-ray school. I moved to Birmingham and attended Carraway Methodist Medical Center's x-ray school. I completed the school and began working as a Registered X-ray Technologist in 1973. While in x-ray school, I met my future husband, Allen Franklin, who had just come home from Vietnam. He was a friend of one of my classmates. We married the weekend after I graduated. I worked as an X-ray Tech for a couple of years & then decided to move on to something new. I took a job teaching girls to be medical secretaries in a technical school. I worked there for 10 years during which time we had our only child, Christopher. After 10 years & with a newborn, I was pretty burned out so I moved on again. I had been "bitten" by the computer bug at the technical school, so my next job was for a company that sold word proce...Expand for more
ssors, computers, software and networks. I was their trainer - I taught the customers how to use their newly purchased equipment and helped set up their new networks. My company sent me to school and I became a Certified Network Engineer and Administrator. I continued working in the computer industry until I retired, setting up networks in all the Jefferson County (Birmingham, AL) high schools, working in Network Data Security for 3 major bank home offices, & finally as the Systems Manager for our county's Senior Citizens' Office. I retired in 2011 & and have been staying around home to take care of our 2 super grands and help with homework, etc. We have a granddaughter (11) and grandson (6.). Allen & I will be celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary this November...who knew way back then we would be together all this time. He just retired last September (2017) so we are both enjoying the grands. He got into the computer industry way back there & and retired as the Director of the Computer Help Desk for our county. Our son, Chris, decided to become a firefighter and paramedic. A couple of years ago, he graduated from the University of South Alabama & was promoted to Lieutenant and our Fire Department's Training Officer. He also teaches a Fire Science class at the High School in our city, Trussville, which is a suburb of Birmingham.
