Delores's Story
Life
About Me
I'd say I have led a fulfilling life, living in no less than 14 states, including a wonderful interlude in Bangkok, Thailand in 1959 and 1960 with my parents and five siblings, all of whom now live in the Denver Area. I've held a number of great jobs -- mostly in higher education -- and I've a patented invention. I'm financially secure in a conservative way, I'm in good health, and I've many goals and objectives yet to attain, which makes for an active, interesting, and rewarding life ahead of me.
My Job
I have a very interesting career position in the Chancellor's Immediate Office at UC Berkeley, where I've been for the past twenty years. Retirement is being put off for at least one more year as we have a new Chancellor at Berkeley and I feel I've yet much to contribute to his office as Special Projects and Facilities Manager. It's my guess that it will happen in two years, as personal time is becoming very important to me in the Autumn of my life -- time to write prose and poetry and time to spend with my two daughters and my grandchildren speaking of whom. . .
My Kids
Daughter Laura is 45 and stunningly beautiful, with flowing golden red hair. She's a Faculty HR Director in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Berkeley. Because the Chancellor's Immediate Office is in the same building (California Hall), we get to see each other every day (a wonderful perk!). Laura has blessed me with three grandchildren. Daughter Heather, age 43, is what I call my "free spirit." She's nonconventional and is also quite a beauty, with long blonde tresses. She has never married, but has found the love of her life, so there's still a small ray of hope that I'll be a grandma one more time.
My Interests
As I alluded to above, I love writing and am in the proce...Expand for more
ss of completing a novel that I started with Salisbury, Maryland City Historian Richard Waller Cooper. My ancestry and Richard's play a major role in the novel. Since his untimely death, it has been very hard for me to complete it without him; but I'm working on it chapter by chapter, page by page. The setting for the novel is Maryland's Eastern Shore, a place that I came to love from the time I was age 16 and living in Dover, Delaware. Some of my ancestry has its roots in Salisbury, MD, a beautiful city in Spring and Fall, but where summers are humid and winters freezing.
I also have a love of the California Gold Country, where I have founded a little library comprised of Children's Classics and, for adults, the Great Books. The library has a poetry, history, and genealogy section and houses a little lumberjack museum of sorts as the building is in an historic lumber camp in the Sierra Foothills. I started with 50 books and now have over 6,000! I've added an entire section of biographies. Lots to keep me busy when I'm not working or gardening or caring for my cats. Speaking of cats. . .
My Pets
Since first writing this "Story," my gigantic yellow and white tabby named "Mr. Thomas" passed away a couple of years ago, but I still have his offspring, "Thomasina," who still lives year-round at my cottage in the California Gold Country. I still to there nearly every weekend -- just three hours' drive from Berkeley. I hope to retire there, between regular sojourns to Salisbury, and Dover.
It's always a pleasure to find a familiar name on the various Classmates rosters I've linked up to. I especially enjoy hearing from friends from Dover and Bangkok. Those were the best years of my young adulthood. Any of you reading this who have similar roots, please let me hear from you.
