House of Representatives, 2004-2008 -State Representative, 1995-2011 -Professor of Economics, 1980-2011 Barney School of Business, University of Hartford - Assistant Professor of Economics, Suffolk University, 1977-1979 - Giannaros Associates, 1991-present - Manager/Sole Owner, DEJE Group, LLC Dr. Demetrios Giannaros retired as Professor of Economics at the University of Hartford after 31 years of service. He was first elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1994 and served as State Representative, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Deputy Majority (D) Leader, until 2011. Rep. Giannaros and his family of seven, immigrated from Greece on March 11, 1964 and settled in Boston, MA (initially Dorchester, South End, West Roxbury and, finally, Chestnut Hill, MA) -- before moving to Farmington CT in 1982. He has served on many CT Legislative Committees, including Chair of Education, Chair of Energy and Technology Committees and Vice Chair of Finance and Revenue and Bonding. Most recently, he was a member of the Higher Education, Executive Nominations and Finance, Revenue and Binding Committees. He has also served on the Connecticut State Tax Commission, International Trade Commission, the Legislature™s Clean Air Group and as Commissioner, Commission on Children. Rep. Giannaros received his PhD in Economics, MA in Development Economics and an MA in Political Economy from Boston University and his BA in Economics from UMASS, Boston. Since his graduation he has taught at Boston University, Suffolk University, Trinity College and Jagiellonian University (Poland), in addition to the University of Hartford. At the University of Hartford, Rep. Giannaros has served in a number of administrative positions: Director of International Studies, Associate to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of Executive Masters in Public Administration Program. In 1997-1998, Prof. Giannaros was a Visiting Faculty Fellow at Yale University. He is also the recipient of the prestigious American Council on Education Fellowship (ACE Fellow). his stay in DC, he worked for the International Education Commission and served as Special Assistant to the President of The George Washington University concentrating on administration and budgets. During 1993-1998, Prof. Giannaros was Director of the U.S. Consortium for Management Education in Central and Eastern Europe -- a special cooperative project comprised of Columbia University, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Boston College and University of Hartford The goal of this project was to train professors and executives in former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe for the transition to market economies and to assist in establishing western-style business schools at their universities. Rep. Giannaros is a well-respected economist. He consults, lectures and makes presentations on economic, business, and public policy issues, nationally and internationally. He has published extensively in many professional business and economic journals. His article, The Budget Deficit Debate: A Review of the Recent Empirical Studies, which was co-authored with Dr. Bharat Kolluri, was cited twice (January 1987 and January 1989) by the Congressional Budget Office in its report to the U.S. Congress. He also served on the Board of Directors of the College of Southeastern Europe, the CT Invention Convention and as President of the Northeast Business and Economics Association. In 2002, Rep. Giannaros was elected President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association, an association of elected Hellenes (Greek heritage) in Parliaments, Prime Ministers and Cabinet member from around the globe. In June of 2007, he was re-elected in Athens Greece and competed his last term, as President of WHIA, in July of 2009. Dr. Giannaros was Principal of Giannaros Associates -- working on special consulting projects. He lives in Farmington CT with his wife Elizabeth (from Brookline, MA and Psychico/Athens, Greece). They have two sons, Edward has MBA in Finance, University of Hartford and BA in International Business for George Washington University. He is Financial Analyst/Data and Software Engineer for Travelers Group, Inc). His son S. Jason was a Legislative Aide at the US Senate, received his PhD in International Relations/Political Science from U of Southern California is a Visiting Professor at a Pepperdine University. He has taught at Georgetown University (MA in Public Policy from GU)), and was Adjunct Prof. at California Lutheran University. Dr. Giannaros currently volunteers as President the National Immigrant Heritage Center/Immigrant Heritage Hall of Fame, was President of the Greenbriar Foundation (2015-20), President and Vice President of the CT. Invention Convention (2008-2017), and, Board Member, and VP of CT Immigrant and Refugee Coalition (2018-2022. Also serves a Trustee of the Polish -America Foundation, among others.
