Denise's Story

Life I'm currently living in El Dorado Hills. I worked for Sacramento County for 12 1/2 years as a Licensed Psychiatric Nurse until 7/05. I am married to a wonderful man who is a Psychologist. Currently, I manage my Husband's private practice from home while doing the stay-at-home Mom thing. I have four gorgeous & active children-ages 13 (Anthony - 7th grade, on the Honor role with straight A's), 10 (Andrew - 4th grade, plays the Clarinet), 7 1/2 (Alyssa - 2nd grade, loves Soccer and Choir), & 5 1/2 (Gillian -Kindergarten, loves everything). They tend to keep me very busy. I look forward to hearing from people that I haven't seen or heard from in years. Military I joined the Air Force in August 1988 through March 1993. I spent 6 months in San Antonio, Texas training to become a Mental Health Specialist. I then was stationed at Travis AFB in Fairfield, California. I spent most of my active duty time stationed there, except for 2 months during Desert Storm when I was sent to England. Looking back on my military memories, I can only really remember the good/great ones. Making long lasting friends and wonderful co-workers. Basic training memories of Estelle, Mike, Louis, Teresa, & Bruce. Fort Sam Houston - Gina A., Greg B., Nikki A., Steve S., Calhoun, and several others...the memories we shared...those cabins we partied in and the hotel rooms we packed. Tons of tremendous fun and awesome memories, that I will never forget. DGMC - outpatient mental health - Penny, Brenda, Kris, Rhonda, Maurice & Dina...ARC - Michael, Carlos, Bill...Expand for more
, Fernando, Cheryl & Jeff I have fond memories of you all! Our trip to Nocton Hall England during Desert Storm - Liana, Brenda, Rhonda, Maurice, Joe, Fernando and many, many others, an experience that only those who were there can understand! Life doesn't always go as smoothly as we would like it to. Some experiences can change your whole life. I realized this 8-9 years ago....In April 1999, I was involved in an accident. There was a fire on the stove in my kitchen and I was home alone with my two young boys (4 & 1) When I noticed the fire I obviously tried to put it out. The pan had a large amount of grease in it that had caught fire and the flames were to the ceiling. I was able to get the fire out, however being that I had two small children in the house I didn't want the hot grease pan on the front of the stove or on the hot burner, so I attempted to move the hot pan to the back burner and all went very wrong from there..... I attempted to move the pan which agitated the hot grease inside it and then it reignited the fire causing a flash burn to my face making me lose control of the pan causing the hot grease to topple over the sides of the pan onto my arms and legs..... the grease caused third degree burns to 18% of my total body area. I spent 2 weeks at U.C. Davis Hospital on the Burn unit. I had skin grafting surgery, which means that they took some layers of skin from my legs and attached those layers to my 3rd degree burns on my arms. I was unable to move for the following 5 days....the worst 5 days of my life....stay tuned
