Denise's Story
I live in Calaveras County, in the Sierra Foothills, near Murphys. My dad still lives in Barstow, so I still visit and love the desert. My sister Cheryl ('72) recently passed away, so I am very saddened by that. I have two wonderful grown children, a daughter who lives in NY, and a son still in college in Stockton. I still play my clarinet(!) in a local community band. I am a counselor with "high risk" teens and children. I have a telescope and lead local astronomy nights with friends. I have a little "farm" (I am a small town country girl), and love gardening too. I love the outdoors and do a lot of kayaking, hiking, etc. I recently found my yearbooks, so am remembering names and faces! :0) Life is good...
Some memories: Having a huge "crush" on Greg Feasel as a freshman (I don't think he even knew my name), seeing Led Zepplin in concert at the Orange Auditorium in San Bernardino ("Come from the Land of Ice and Snow"...), walking at lunch to the Bus Station or the Hot Dog Stand (what a thrill!)...putting Strawberry Hill Wine in Del Taco ice cups & drinking before football games and half time band shows (sorry Ms. Barnett!), cracking up with Bonnie David and Tina Garcia, and trying hard not to be distracted by the wacky and way tall Thomas Huxley and his swaying tuba. And did we really powder those awful suede white band shoes to keep them white? Hey have you s...Expand for more
een our old Riffian Band uniform in the Barstow museum? Now an historical artifact! Check it out!
More memories...Cruising with Loretta (Becknall) in her old maroon car she named "Winifred" - checking out the crowd at Hartwick's parking lot (looking for parties), cracking up so hard with Mona (Poe) at the Skyline drive-in theater that we rolled out of the car (a Woody Allen movie)....watching meteor showers out in the desert with Meredith Serra and Joyce Federiuk (where my love of the night sky began)...making a movie with Penny Weaver at Calico, set to Alice Cooper's "Desperado", splicing and scotch-taping the 8mm film by hand for Mr. Robinson's humanity class....way cool art projects in Mr. Lange's art classes...trying to raise my bowling score above 90 in GAA... Lot's of music on 8 Track Tapes and albums - Aqualung by Jethro Tull and Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower, and hearing everyone try to learn Stairway to Heaven on guitar! :0) And "rocking out" at concerts by our local band Hambone (glad to see you're still playing guitar, Randy Partridge!) & I wish I could remember my favorite song of theirs. And being so devastated by Larry Sumrow's suicide, that I could not attend his memorial service. Well not to end on a sad note...I am still in touch with Loretta & Mona, and saw Richard Riley in concert in Sonora! It was very cool! He is still funny and awesome!
