Denise's Story

SCHOOL DAYS My oldest friend is Sue Allen. My parents moved in our house on Leibacher when I was 6 weeks. I believe the Allen's moved in a couple of years later. Those in our area attended New River School and also Corvallis Intermediate, where I was Vice Mayor and Treasurer. I will never forget the memories of my baton twirling days for the Downey Harmonettes. I was able to share this experience with my sister, Renee, Sue Allen, Denise Snyder and Terri Carroll. We traveled to Arizona for competitions each year and had such a good time, besides all of the competitions throughout the year. Another standout memory is my days in the Brownies and Girl Scouts, troop 592. Our leader, Willy Moye, is what made our troop so strong. Lots of good times. When I think back of my days at Norwalk High School - I usually end up smiling. Fortunately for me, my close friends from NHS are still in my life; Terri Carroll, Diane Johnston, Sue Allen and Denise Snyder and Michelle Blew. My freshman year began with me being a member of the majorette squad. This helped me feel comfortable at the school by being involved. I was also class Treasurer. My sophomore year I was also a majorette (we took 2nd in the state of CA) and class Secretary. I met Mike Snyder, who was my boyfriend through high school and after. My junior year I decided to try out for Pep Squad as a Flag Twirler. I made it and was on Flag both my junior and senior years. Being on Pep Squad was a great experience for me; papering football player's houses, making posters, the games, etc. When thinking back, my favorite teachers were Mr. Mouw, and Mr. O'Kane (photo). Mrs. Houts was probably most influential because she taught me how to type. I became a computer graphic artist which requires a lot of typing. Other friends that meant a lot to me were Karen Morris, Cindy Smith, & Debbie Vollick. I had lots of guy friends such as Greg Kelleher, John Armijo, Tony Moreno, Tim Rodriguez, Derald Wimmer, Dave Rodriguez, Dave Blew, Rick Deese, Tim Parrino & Gilbert Campos. Being at Huntington by Jack in the Box, beach parties, pep rallies, driving around in my '65 Mustang, with friends are fond memories for me. CAREER My first job was in 1972 at Judy's, where I got paid $1.85 to sell clothes. What I remember most about it is I spent ...Expand for more
every penny I made on their clothes. Following that time, I was employed by Beach Community Hospital in Buena Park as an Insurance Clerk. In 1974, I was trained as a graphic artist/typesetter at a printing company. This would lead me to starting my own business in 1979. I've been self-employed since then, specializing in layout and design of custom forms, brochures, and most printed material. One of my favorites is a yearbook for a private Christian School that I create every year. It's been wonderful to work out of my home (in my PJ's). I met my husband, Joe, at Apperson Business Forms, the printing company. We were married for 40 years, but I lost him to a motorcycle accident in July, 2020. OUR KIDS: Joe and I have three grown children. Rocky is in the IT field and lives in South OC Randy is married, and has been in the medical field for many years in San Clemente. Amanda, besides being beautiful outside, she's beautiful inside as well. She is married, living in SD and still a hair stylist. HOBBIES: One of my favorite times in my life was being involved with Dog Shows. I traveled with a professional handler in her motor home for a few years. My English Cocker Spaniel became a champion. I also showed Irish Setters. We traveled all over California, Arizona and Oregon. What a great time that was. I enjoy genealogy, and have traced over 4,000 members of my family. My grandma instilled a love of "family", and told many great stories. I started a family website on myfamily.com so that many of my cousins and extended family can keep in touch and share in those old memories, history and vintage pictures. I've also enjoyed posting pictures on Flicker.com, a website to share your photos. I'm obsessed with the Los Angeles Dodgers! I haven't missed a game for many years. Joe and I had season tickets, but I gave them up after he passed away. LIFE LESSONS: My hero is my mom. She was, and is the best influence in my life. The way that both of my parents welcomed all of our friends into our home and life, is priceless to me. They took them on vacation with us and listened to their problems as well. I would only hope that my children feel the same way about me. I am a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and have learned what's really important in life.
