Denise's Story

Life After graduation, I attended Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina on a football scholarhip. Upon graduation, I started teaching and coaching at Lassiter High School and then moved to Walton High School (Cobb County School System). I received my M.Ed. & Ed. S. degrees from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. I am married to the former Denise Dunn a graduate of Wheeler High School (Cobb County). We have been blessed with 3 beautiful daughters including Katie...age 11, Mary Claire...age 5 and Sadie...age 5 (you guessed it....identical twins!) My wife worked as director of employee relations with a software development company until the birth of our twin daughters in November of 1999. From 1999 until the present she has served a a full-time mom. I spent the majority of my educational career in the Cobb County School System. Of my years in Cobb, several were spent serving as principal of South Cobb High School before moving to the central office to serve as director of operational support services for middle & high schools. After receiving a call from the Cartersville City School System in March 2001, I realized a wonderful opportunity was available and that interaction with teachers and students on a daily basis was missing while serving in my position at the central office of the Cobb County School System. With this in mind, I had the opportunity to expose myself to another perspective of educational leadership by accepting a position with the Cartersville City School System. Therefore, I served as principal of Cartersville High School in Cartersville, Georgia for several years. While at Cartersville, the high school underwent a $22 million renovation and construction project. Also, the athletic program won the director's cup for having the overall best athletic program in the state two (2) years in a row. This marked Cartersville High School as the only public school to win this prestigous award in back-to-back years....Expand for more
There have been other private schools to accomplish this achievement, but thus far not another public school. This gave me the experience of working in a large metro county school system (Cobb County) with a wonderful reputation and in a small suburban city school system (Cartersville City) with a wonderful reputation. In my profession as most others good experience is the key to opening the doors of opportunity which allow you to reach your career goals. Currently my family resides in Valdosta, Georgia where I serve as principal of Valdosta High School. The high school has a rich tradition embedded in both academic and extra-curricular activities. Valdosta High School is a nationally recognized school of excellence with an outstanding new multi-million dollar performing arts center on campus. The newly constructed and renovated multi- million football stadium (Bazemore-Hyder Stadium) is one of the finest in the southeastern portion of the United States. The field (Cleveland Field) is covered with SpinTurf which is a new and improved version of AstroTurf. Valdosta State University leases our football facilites for their home football games. The Valdosta City School System is a large metro city school system at the heart of a recently named metropolitan area supported by Valdosta State University and Moody Air Force Base. Tallahassee, Florida and Gainesville, Florida are large university locations which are a little more than an hours drive away. Katie our oldest daughter is involved in competition cheerleading and participates on a premier traveling soccer team. Recently, her soccer team competed at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida against teams from all over the United States. Also, her competition cheerleading squad recently won a national championship. Mary Claire is the true "tom boy" of the family by being involved in many sports even including karate. Sadie is the "prissy girl" with her interest in dance and gymnastics.
