Denise's Story
I moved to New York in 1981 to join my husband in his family business. We bought a house in Denver in 1986 and have been going back and forth between the two since then. I have actually spent most of the last 8 years in New York, 1st because of 9-11 (our home is only about 13 blocks away from where the towers stood), and then because of health and business issues. My husband and I both worked down at Ground Zero everyday for 9 months. He became sick 1st (heart attack, which he survived, Thank the Lord), then one of our tenants got drunk and almost burned our building down, and then I became ill (Graves Disease) which the government refuses to believe was caused by working down at Ground Zero. But today we're both reasonably healthy, happy and still fighting with our insurance company over the fire!! We have a great apartment in the city and we even have a guest apartment for our friends who come to visit. Our son JoeBen just turned 31 ...Expand for more
this year and lives in Denver and helps us out in N.Y. too. We have two amazing dogs, Bruno Calzone and Roxanne who is the gentlest blue nose pit bull I have ever met and Bruno who is the funniest pit mix around. Bruno just turned 8 and Roxy will be 5 this year. I am in Denver for the month of August working on our house which has been sadly neglected in these last 8 years but I will be back in New York for Sept. 11. We have held an open house on that day every year since '02 for workers, volunteers, firefighters, police, family members of those lost so that people can get together to reminisce about their loved ones and to see and catch up with the friends that we made during that time. Lots of tears. laughter, hugs and even new frie ndships made. Every year at this time we also hang a flag that hung down at Ground Zero on our building. There are pictures of the flag on our building in New
York at the website TheGroundZeroFlag.com.
