Denise's Story
Workplace
It took a couple months after graduating and turning 18 before I could secure a full time job in secretarial work. I started out as a dictaphone typist for attorney's Eggenberg, Eggenberg, McKinney & Weber downtown in the Guardian Bldg. Tired of driving downtown I found work at the Central Regional Office for Kresge's ending up in the construction department when Kresge stores were closing and Kmarts were being build every where. My father retired from the police force in 72 and moved up north to the little town where he was born. At the time I said I would never move up there, but a year later there I was. I worked for the local newspaper for 3 years where I learned to type fast, but my boss was always faster. After getting married in 76 I moved to Mtn. Home AFB, ID and found work at a Youth Rehabilitation Center for a year and a half. Working with troubled kids was an eye opener. lovis AFB, NM. A transfer to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas in 1981 and buying a house gave great cause to go back to work. Found work for the State of Nevada, State Industrial Insurance System at the Jean Hanna Clark Rehabilitation Center for four years in the Records Department and then the Medical Department. One last transfer to Pease AFB in NH and another bundle of joy in 85. My husband retired in 1987 back to our small town in northern Michigan. I spent four years working for the county's Community Mental Health Board starting in 1989. Took a year off before starting at the local school and not doing secretarial work for the first time in my life. I spent six years in the Timeout/Focus Room helping students look at their behavior in the classroom and to make changes. In 2000, missing secretarial work, I became secretary to the counselor and hope to remain until I retire. Each of my secretarial jobs have been different and have taught me so much.
